When E-mail Lists Go Bad

Posted at September 7, 2006 02:43 PM in Case IT , spam .

I have gotten 4-6 spam e-mails today that were addressed to case-campus@case.edu or case-students@case.edu. Someone, please explain to me how e-mails sent to these addresses are getting passed a moderation queue. Please tell me there is a moderation queue...

They *are* moderated lists. Except for right now. The move of Sympa to new hardware caused some problems and we had to open them up for the time being. Once the new system's Postfix config is up to snuff, we'll be closing them off again.

Can't you disable the lists until everything is working? It seems the spam amount is increasing and it is doing nothing except make people angry.

Perhaps, if it will still be a while before the list is re-closed, someone from ITS could send a message to the list explaining the situation and asking people to refrain from sending 'please remove me' messages to the entire list (which is only aggravating the situation).

Please do something. It's hard to imagine Case students being so rediculously stupid, but there you go.

The root problem has been fixed. The lists are resecured.
