Case Students Portal Savvy

Posted at October 25, 2006 05:42 PM in Case IT , Oracle , portals .

In the ITS Freshmen Survey, I found this quote:

More than half the students are customizing their MyCase experience (which is very high and suggests a degree of tech savvy that is well above national averages for portal technology.

I thought this was interesting because the Oracle Portal we run here is the most user-unfriendly web software I have ever used. Even I have difficulty figuring out how to customize it. Not that it needs to be customized, as the default layout has everything you would never want to use.

I still find it amazing that Oracle, with the billions of dollars that they have, is unable to put together a simple-to-use interface for any piece of software they produce. Surely if two undergraduates can code start.case.edu in their spare time in the course of a week and other portal sites like Pageflakes exhibit the potential of web portals, then Oracle can surely produce something fun to use.

Just because people answered a question saying they customized the portal doesn't really give us much useful information.

First, we don't know that they know what customizing means. "Customizing" could be as simple as clicking on a one of the X boxes to get rid of some of the crap that is there by default!
