What Do Others Think of PeopleSoft

Posted at October 25, 2006 10:41 PM in Case IT , Oracle , PeopleSoft , failures of technology .

Case is switching to the PeopleSoft Enterprise Campus Solutions to manage student information. I was browsing around Willipedia (Williams College wiki) and found their article on PeopleSoft.

Some quotes:

The PeopleSoft system, which students access and operate by their web-browsers, is widely complained about, and many students refer to the system, or the perennial practice of registering for classes through it, as the "PeopleSoft Hell".
Students also complain of the program's speed. Because of the need to click through many menus and buttons to perform even the simplest functions

It is good to see what we have to look forward to.

Also, if anybody from Williams is reading, I really like http://wso.williams.edu. Very simple and to the point. I love it. It is so cool that all the social networking services are located under one umbrella.

PeopleSoft is a "framework" type app. As such, it is designed to be everything to everybody. One NCSU team took their payroll module and made it run just like the mainframe app it was replacing. Including having to take it offline to do batch processing. Lovely.

The NCSU financials team took another approach. Change the system to match more of the PeopleSoft defaults to reduce customization requirements. This actually involved amendments to state laws in some cases. They succeeded. Wanna guess which PS app runs better?

A PS implementation motto: Just because you can; don't.
