Threats aren't cool
Threatening people is never a good way to motivate.

While many managers resort to threats, I contend that it is NEVER a good way to motivate. In my mind, there are very few, if any exceptions to this rule. Even when things are going quite badly, threats do no good. In that situation, everyone is aware of the dire straits the organization is in. If you keep and upbeat attitude with your employees, I think it will motivate them more than threats.
Being a manager that doesn't threaten his employees is part of a whole attitude toward management and motivation that places a manager in the shoes of his employee. Many of my previous entries have dealt with issues that boil down to finding what the employees want. Good emotional intelligence is a requirement for this, as well as the leadership ability to implement the appropriate strategies.

What is the difference between a 'threat' and a 'demotivator' like we talked about last semester? It seems like there could be a fine line here. Suppose a manager said, 'if you don't get these TPS reports done on time, you won't get a Christmas bonus.' Is that a threat, or a demotivator?

I agree there is a fine line, but threats seem to stem more directly from job performance. Threats revolve more around firing and political leverage, whereas demotivation is more about expecting less on a whole from the job experience.

I've just been hanging out not getting anything done. What can I say? I've basically been doing nothing worth mentioning, but pfft. Not that it matters. Pretty much nothing exciting happening to speak of. I haven't been up to much these days.

I just don't have much to say these days, but so it goes. Today was a total loss. I guess it doesn't bother me.

Basically nothing noteworthy happening right now, but eh. Today was a complete loss. I haven't been up to much recently. I've pretty much been doing nothing worth mentioning.

retty much nothing seems worth thinking about. My life's been completely dull , not that it matters. I've just been staying at home waiting for something to happen.
