Clinical Coordinator, HIV Program Project, Biological Sciences, School of Dental Medicine (Job 8836), minimum annual salary is $33,410, posted 10/26/09This position is critical for the successful and efficient operation of the newly funded program project (PPG) entitled “Oral Mucosal Immunity in Vulnerable HIV Infected Populations”. The mission of the PPG is to identify changes in innate defense mechanisms that increase susceptibility to oral complications following HIV infection. Discovering how this pathology occurs in the mouth may offer the potential for understanding how similar complications arise in other body sites. There are four research projects under the grant.

Working under general supervision, recruit patients with cardiovascular disease and sleep apnea for a clinical trial comparing supplemental oxygen to CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), assessing the relative improvement in cardiovascular risk factors with each treatment. Duties include performing screening tests, including providing home sleep monitors, review medical history and symptoms from questionnaires and medical records and obtain informed consent. The research assistant will also assist with collection and processing of a variety of clinical and physiological data from participants studied at the Dahms Clinical Research Unit (DCRU) during morning visits. Data collected on each subject are comprehensive and include a wide array of physiological, anthropomorphic, functional, and medical tests. Arrangements will need to be made to retrieve some of the data that is collected in the homes of the subjects.
Adeptness is required for meticulous adherence to a complex protocol, diligence in recruiting large numbers of subjects per week, and sensitivity in interacting with patients. Individuals must be able to clearly explain a complex informed consent form, develop rapport with a wide variety of research participants, identify appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria for specific aspects of the protocol; identify physiological reactions that might require a physician or nurse intervention. Other skills include the ability to identify potential problems with equipment malfunction, performance of ongoing quality control and preventive maintenance of equipment. Strict adherence to quality control procedures for data collection and scoring also are needed, including organization of regular assessments of inter- and intra-technician reliability.

Working under general supervision, recruit patients with cardiovascular disease and sleep apnea for a clinical trial comparing supplemental oxygen to CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), assessing the relative improvement in cardiovascular risk factors with each treatment. Duties include performing screening tests, including providing home sleep monitors, review medical history and symptoms from questionnaires and medical records and obtain informed consent. The research assistant will also assist with collection and processing of a variety of clinical and physiological data from participants studied at the Dahms Clinical Research Unit (DCRU) during morning visits. Data collected on each subject are comprehensive and include a wide array of physiological, anthropomorphic, functional, and medical tests. Arrangements will need to be made to retrieve some of the data that is collected in the homes of the subjects.
Adeptness is required for meticulous adherence to a complex protocol, diligence in recruiting large numbers of subjects per week, and sensitivity in interacting with patients. Individuals must be able to clearly explain a complex informed consent form, develop rapport with a wide variety of research participants, identify appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria for specific aspects of the protocol; identify physiological reactions that might require a physician or nurse intervention. Other skills include the ability to identify potential problems with equipment malfunction, performance of ongoing quality control and preventive maintenance of equipment. Working with a high degree of independence and under general direction, oversee the collection of data from four sites in Cleveland, Boston and Baltimore participating in a NIH funded clinical trial comparing oxygen with CPAP therapy for patients with heart disease. The individual will ensure that standardized high quality data are collected from home sleep records, 24 hour blood pressure recordings, and vascular tests performed in a clinical research setting. The individual also will be responsible for scoring all sleep records, following standardized protocols and process the data into formats amenable for digitized analysis. The individual also will edit and process the blood pressure and vascular measures and output from CPAP machines showing what pressures are needed for sleep apnea treatment. S/he will generate final analytical files with these data, summary quality reports, and assist with feedback to data collection technicians on ways to maintain or improve data quality. This individual will also need to identify in a timely manner physiological data that represent clinical problems and require prompt intervention.
Experience in polysomnography is required to assure that excellent quality of signals are captured, even in face of the challenges of monitoring in unattended settings. Must be able to learn new scoring procedures, and strictly follow NIH guidelines for study interpretation and analysis. Must maintain very high levels of scoring reliability. Must understand the technical operation of polysomnographic equipment and sophisticated computers for data acquisition and analysis. Other responsibilities include report generation and interpretation, application of software to identify unusual physiological patterns. It also includes working on new research projects that can lead to an increased understanding of the HIV-1 infection.
