Microsoft Issues Critical Patch for WMF Vulnerability

Microsoft Corporation announced that it has released a patch for the critical security vulnerability which had been discovered recently. Initially Microsoft had announced that the patch would not be available until January 10, 2006.

If you are a Windows user, please install this important patch immediately. The patch is available here. If left unaddressed, the vulnerability poses a serious threat and, in extreme cases, permits unauthorized users to gain control of computers remotely.

Please also follow these general security recommendations:

1. If your machine is not set up to do automatic Windows Updates, configure your computer to run these updates automatically by clicking http://help.case.edu/safe/maintain/update/win/howto/winup/view

2. Update your virus definitions at http://symantec.com/avcenter/download.html

3. If you don't have the latest Symantec antivirus software on your computer (version 10.2), go to the Case Software Center at http://softwarecenter.case.edu to download your free copy.

Please also keep in mind the following:

1. Do not open email attachments from individuals you do not recognize.

2. Do not open email attachments that have strange subject lines.

3. If you receive an email from someone you know, but it looks odd, call the person to verify the authenticity of the message.

4. Exercise caution when clicking on embedded sites within emails, on websites, or in instant messaging programs.
