In reviewing backup solutions for Case, ITS has found a cost-effective, efficient means to provide personal computer backup and retrieval for Case Faculty, Staff and Students. Carbonite will provide unlimited storage capacity and the secure, automatic backup of files on your desktop or laptop computer. This is a pay-for-use commercial service at user’s expense.
Key features are:
• Very low cost (we cannot come close to matching this cost)
o $4.17 per month per computer with a 1 year contract ($49.95/year)
o $3.75 per month per computer with a 2 year contract ($89.95/2 yrs)
o $3.55 per month per computer with a 4 year contract ($169.95/4 yrs)
• No limit on the amount of storage that can be backed up
• Always on whenever the computer is connected to the Internet
• Backups occur when your computer is not very busy
• Files are backed up as they are changed
• All data is encrypted
• Available now for Windows. Mac OS version: May beta, June release
Important items to note regarding Carbonite:
• Carbonite does not backup software programs, but only user generated files
• Initial backups may take several days, but subsequent files will be backed up very quickly.
• Restoring files is a much faster procedure for users.
• Individual files must be less than 2Gbs to be backed up on Carbonite.
Please note that the Legato backup service for desktops/notebooks will be discontinued on June 30th, 2007. This means that any files that have been backed up via the Legato solution will no longer be available for retrieval after that time.
