Carbonite Online PC Backup Link Available

The Software Center has created a link to Carbonite Online PC Backup, which is now available to Case students faculty and staff as a paid subscription. Carbonite is only available for Windows but a Macintosh version is under development.

Carbonite is the preferred backup for all Case desktops and laptops. You can backup your irreplaceable files automatically with Carbonite Online Backup.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Carbonite Online PC Backup is hosted on the Carbonite website and servers. The Software Center is providing a link to the software as a convenience to the user community. The Software Center is not responsible for the proper functioning of the software and will NOT provide support for the product or the installation. In addition, the Software Center is not responsible for sales transactions. All business is done directly with Carbonite, including renewals. All support questions should be addressed to Carbonite.

Case Software Center Announces Software Offering Changes
New Student Licensing Enrollment for Adobe
The Software Center (https://softwarecenter.case.edu) has entered into a “Student Licensing Enrollment” agreement with Adobe, providing Case Western Reserve University students the ability to purchase Adobe software at deep discounts, amounting to as much as 85%.

Adobe software available under this agreement includes: Photoshop CS3 Extended, CS3 Master Collection, CS3 Web Premium & Web Standard, and Illustrator CS3. There is a large selection of Adobe products to choose for both WIN and MAC platforms.

Unlike software downloaded from the Software Center (which you are required to remove upon termination of your status at Case) each software license purchased by the student under this enrollment agreement are then owned by the student.

The Case Software Center has teamed up with JourneyEd to provide an easy link to view and/or purchase these discounted Adobe products. As always, Case students should visit the Case Software Center prior to purchasing any software products. Go to https://softwarecenter.case.edu to connect to JourneyEd by selecting “Adobe Software for Students”.

The end of the Spring 2008 semester will bring some changes to the offerings on the Case Software Center site. Due to changes in the licensing agreement with Adobe, students will no longer be able to download and install concurrent use licenses (managed by KeyServer) of Adobe Illustrator CS3, Photoshop CS3 Extended, and CS3 Web Standard. Students who have downloaded and installed these products from the Case Software Center in the past must remove these software products from their computers. We recommend the Adobe software products be uninstalled first, followed by the Keyserver client software.

Please note that this does not apply to Adobe Acrobat Professional software licenses, as we continue to have a site license agreement with Adobe for Acrobat Professional.

In March of 2008 Adobe announced they are offering Adobe Photoshop Express free of charge to Photoshop customers that use the basic features of Photoshop. For more information, please visit: https://www.photoshop.com/express/landing.html or wait for the Software Center posting.

In April of 2008 the Software Center added Microsoft’s Visual Studio Express link, allowing you to download and install fully licensed products of free tools, developer kits and learning tutorials useful for Windows, Web, Game and Hardware development. Please visit the Case Software Center and select “Microsoft Visual Studio Express” to link to Microsoft and download the product of choice free!

In April of 2008 the Software Center will be adding a link to JourneyEd to allow students to download additional software from Microsoft via Microsoft’s DreamSpark program. Case students will be able to download & install full versions of licensed products like: Visual Studio Professional, Expression Studio (which include Web, Blend, Design, and Media), XNA Game Studio, SQL Server Developer Edition, and Windows Server free! Please visit the Case Software Center and select “Microsoft DreamSpark” to link to JourneyEd to place your order for this free software offering from Microsoft.

Codewarrior will be removed from the Case Software Center on May 9th, 2008.

Software Center Endnote Licenses Increased

The Software Center has purchased additional licenses for Endnote, increasing the pool of simultaneous use licenses to 20. Increasing the license count will benefit those that have purchased Endnote from the Software Center by reducing or eliminating delays in using the software due to all licenses being in use.

Microsoft DreamSpark Is Available

The Software Center has made available a link to the Microsoft DreamSpark line of products. Microsoft DreamSpark, which is all about giving students Microsoft professional development and design tools for free, is available to students only. You can obtain Microsoft DreamSpark products by logging onto the Software Center and clicking on the “Microsoft DreamSpark” link from the Software Center home page.

Now, for the first time, Microsoft is making its valuable software developer tools available to students worldwide, for free – including Visual Studio Professional, Expression Studio (which include Web, Blend, Design, and Media), XNA Game Studio, SQL Server Developer Edition, and Windows Server.
DreamSpark provides a legitimate resource for students like you to download a legal and registered version of Microsoft's software development tools whether you need the tools for your classes or simply for furthering your knowledge or for fun.

Microsoft Visual Studio Express Editions linked from Software Center

The Software Center has linked the Microsoft Visual Studio Express Editions installers to the Software Center from the Microsoft Website. This link is available to all Case students, faculty and staff. The Microsoft Visual Studio Express Editions are a collection of free tools, developer kits and learning tutorials useful for Windows, Web, Game and Hardware development.

Express Edition tools include:

•Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition - Productivity that is ideal for first time or casual Windows programming.

•Visual C# 2008 Express Edition - A great combination of power and productivity for the Windows developer.

Phishing message being sent to Case community

Case users are advised that a message purporting to be from the "case.edu messaging center" is not a legitimate email request. This is a phishing scam, (href="http://securityaware.case.edu/aware_phishing.html )and not a legitimate email request.

Users should never share their usernames, passwords, or other personal information. If you have replied to the message, you are advised to change your password immediately. You may change your password by connecting to https://its-services.case.edu/my-case-identity/password/change/

Microsoft Office 2008 For Macintosh Is Available

Microsoft Office 2008 for Macintosh is available for downloading from the Software Center. Office 2008 is available for Case Students, Faculty and Staff and works with Macs with an Intel, PowerPC G5 or PowerPC G4 (500 MHz or faster) processor and Mac OS X version 10.4.9 or later.

Office 2008 for Mac is a suite of desktop productivity applications that is designed to work specifically with the Macintosh operating system. It provides Macintosh users with applications for creating effective documents, sharing ideas with other users on Macintosh computers or Windows-based computers, and managing information efficiently. With its updated user interface and collaborative tools, Office 2008 provides enhanced and more secure capabilities for capturing and using business information.

Origin Updated To Version 8

Origin on the Case Software Center has been updated to version 8. Origin 8 is available for Windows, including Vista, and can be downloaded by Case students, faculty and staff.

Origin is the first scientific software to combine presentation-quality graphics, the C language, and the NAG numerical library in a single package.

Origin 8 includes a suite of features that cater to the needs of scientists and engineers alike. Multi-sheet workbooks, publication-quality graphics, and standardized analysis tools provide a tightly integrated workspace for you to import data, create and annotate graphs, explore and analyze data, and publish your work.

LabVIEW Updated To Version 8.5

LabVIEW has been updated to version 8.5 on the Software Center. LabVIEW 8.5 is available to Case Faculty and Staff only, and versions are available for Windows (including Vista), Macintosh OS X and Linux. LabVIEW licenses are free of charge through our site license program.

For more than 20 years, NI LabVIEW graphical development has revolutionized the development of scalable test, measurement, and control applications.

Regardless of experience, engineers and scientists can rapidly and cost-effectively interface with measurement and control hardware, analyze data, share results, and distribute systems.

New features in LabVIEW 8.5:
• Develop applications more efficiently and eliminate incorrect VI linking using the enhanced National Instruments LabVIEW Project.
• Assign time-critical tasks to specific processor cores on multicore systems using the NI LabVIEW Real-Time Module.
• Simplify complex applications with the new LabVIEW Statechart Module

Symantec Endpoint Protection Updated To Version 11 MR1

Symantec Endpoint Protection for Windows has been updated to version 11 MR1. Users that have installed the previously available MR1 patch do not need to install this version, the patch and version 11 MR1 are the same. Version 11 MR1 is a maintenance release that fixes a number of bugs in version 11.

Also available is a patch for Outlook users that run the Outlook protection module and are having a problem opening attachments to a message. The Outlook patch is available by clicking on the appropriate link on the Symantec Endpoint Protection info page, accessible by clicking on the “Symantec Endpoint Protection” button on the Software Center’s home page. Only users that have Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 MR1 installed should install the Outlook patch.

Symantec Endpoint Protection MR1 Patch Available

The Symantec Endpoint Protection MR1 Patch is available for downloading from the Software Center. We recommend that all users install this patch as it includes numerous bug fixes.

To download the patch, click on the “Symantec Endpoint Protection” button from the Software Center home page. After the jump, you will see a link called “UPDATE: Download the MR1 patch HERE”. Click on the link and select “save”.

In most cases, double clicking on the downloaded file (SEP_11.0.1000_Win32.msp) will start the install process.

If a computer has an installed software product that uses the .msp extension, such as Paint Shop Pro, a patch file may not be recognized as a Microsoft Windows Installer Patch file and double-clicking on it will not start the install process.

Procedure To Recognize .msp Files
Instructions provided describe how to call msiexec.exe directly, using the appropriate command line arguments and pointing to the .msp patch file through the following steps:
1. At a DOS command prompt, type 'msiexec.exe' to see if msiexec.exe can be found without specifying its full path.
2. If step 1 returns a message box from the Windows Install, proceed to step 3. If it is not found, search the computer for 'msiexec.exe', usually found in the system32 folder, and note the full path when found.
3. At a DOS command prompt use the following syntax to run the .msp file directly:
C:>\\msiexec.exe /p

In the syntax above, the /p is specified to indicate that a patch is being applied.
Example:
C:>\msiexec.exe /p C:\Users\ SEP_11.0.1000_Win32.msp

SPSS And Amos Upgraded To Version 16

The Software Center has upgraded SPSS and Amos to version 16. Case Students, Faculty and Staff who have a valid SPSS 15 or Amos 7 license are entitled to a free upgrade. The procedure varies as described below.

All students who purchased a SPSS 15 license for 2007-2008 may go to the Software Center and click on the SPSS 16 link for their free upgrade. Students have been automatically upgraded and do not need to do anything except download the new version. Students who do not have a 2007-2008 SPSS license may purchase one for $65. Amos 16 is included with the student version of SPSS 16.

Faculty and Staff should click on the “SPSS 16 for Faculty and Staff UPGRADE ONLY” link to receive their free upgrade. To purchase a license, Faculty and Staff should click on the “SPSS 16 for Faculty and Staff NEW LICENSE ONLY” link. There are two similar links for Amos 16 that are available to faculty and staff.

SPSS 16 now runs on Windows Vista or XP, and the Mac version, available only to Faculty and Staff, will run on OS 10.5 (Intel or PowerPC) or OS 10.4. Please see the download detail page on the Software Center for complete system requirements.
