Scheduled Maintenance: Bulk Mail Server - OS Patching

Problem: Bulk Mail Server - OS Patching Cause: System has been losing contact with the LDAPs Affects: Users of the bulk mail system (ubms.case.edu) Started: 03/12/2008 06:00 AM Resolved: 03/12/2008 06:00 PM
Notes:
We have been experiencing problems with our bulk mail system losing connectivity to the LDAP servers. When the system loses its connection, it stops delivering mail. When the problem occurs, the only way to correct the problem and get the system to start delivering mail again is to reboot the system which suggests an operating system-level problem.
As a first necessary step to correcting the problem we will be bringing the system up to the most current patch level which will require applying a significant number of patches.
In order to minimize the overall down time of the system, we are tentatively planning on patching the system over the course of one contiguous 12-hour maintenance session rather than using a number of shorter early-morning maintenance periods. The bulk mail service (ubms.case.edu) will be unavailable during the entire 12-hour maintenance window.
We do not anticipate a problem with this course of action given the limited usage of the bulk mail system, however we are scheduling this maintenance well in advance to give our users sufficient time to contact us if the time period we have chosen for the maintenance will impact a critical mass-mailing.
If you have a critical mass-mailing (or know of one) scheduled for March 12, that uses the bulk mail system (ubms.case.edu) please contact mail-admin@case.edu as soon as possible so that we may reschedule the system maintenance in a timely fashion.
We apologize for any inconvenience and thank everyone for their cooperation in this matter.
