Problem: Outgoing mail server queues at high levels Cause: Compromised account was relaying spam Affects: Delays mail going off-campus Started: 01/02/2010 10:00 AM Resolved: 01/02/2010 02:00 PM
Notes:
A compromised account was being used to authenticate into the mail system and relay spam through Case causing the mail queues on the outgoing mail servers to fill to several thousand messages (mostly spam).
The compromised account has been disabled.
We have deleted the spam messages and the queues are back to their normal operating levels.
