Emergency Maintenance: Reset of the way Google mail systems are chosen for delivery

Posted by postprob on February 01, 2010 at 03:09 PM

Problem: Reset of the way Google mail systems are chosen for delivery
Cause: Improving delivery speed to Google Apps mailboxes
Affects: Should not (negatively) affect anyone
Started: 02/01/2010 06:00 PM
Resolved: 02/01/2010 06:30 PM

Notes:

We are switching the way that Google mail servers are chosen for delivery of mail into the Google Apps mailboxes. The end result of the change should be that alternate host(s) should be chosen for delivery much more quickly should the original host be unavailable for any reason. The change should provide a much more timely delivery into Google mailboxes, and less queuing of messages on our internal mail servers.

The change is not expected to cause any outage or degradation in service, though we will monitor the changes and delivery times to make sure that the changes have the desired effect.

We do not expect the changes to require the entire window of time reserved.
