Religion and Alcohol: Homer Simpson

Homer Simpson's favorite quote:

"To alcohol, the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems."

Now we do need to replace the word alcohol with religion. Yes, there are those in the world that use religion to advocate violence, and there are some that believe that it will bring salvation to everyone. I consider it a catch-22 pretty much.

Pope Benedict XVI's comments on violence with the Muslim faith were definitely taken out of context, but who is really paying attention to that fact. Regardless of his apology, extremists groups are just busy using this as an excuse to launch a jihad ("holy war") against the West and Christianity.

My question to all of you: Is it possible that religion could spark a fundamentalist revolution in America and give rise to ultra-evangelicalism as a defense against the Islamic extremists?

I think that's inevitable, though it won't be "revolution" and the "ultra-evangelism" won't be an equal-and-opposite medieval christianity. Both because of demographics (Christians breed more) and geopolitics (Radical Islam has defined this as a holy war), this country will become socially and legally more Christian. Deal with it. I don't see it getting worse than, say, the 1950s (which I lived through 4 years of).

Certainly, there is more emphasis on Christian values, but I don't believe we should take a direction on emplacing those values among the rest of the public. I hope it does not go along the response like Katherine Harris who stated that electing non-Christian legislators was a "sin." Why should Christianity be the ideal defense against Radical Islam?

We need more prisons for the demon spirits

Funny Simpson quote.

I feel that religion is a double edged sword that can indeed give us the solution to the problem we are having now but also gives the risk of aggravating it.

I have read somewhere, once, that the practice of pure religion will save many of the problems that plague humanity. I guess that's where its effectiveness will depend largely on- correct practice.

On whether Christianity is the ideal defense we have to Radical Islam, I think that is an overstatement. The pope clearly stated his displeasure in the act that was being done by Radicals and not the people doing them.

Again, That shows us that inevitably, it all boils down to how a group of people practice their religion. Going back to Homer's quote, it all boils down to whether you get intoxicated or not.
