Proposed 2012 London Olympic Logo is an embarassment

2012Logo_LondonOlympics.jpg

Are the people at brand consultancy firm Wolff Olins been drinking on the job? The logo for the 2012 London Olympics above has generated a public outcry and has over 35,000 people signing a petition to scrap it.

The cost to make this logo was 400,000 UK pounds and it took almost a year to create.

Tory MP Philip Davies, who sits on the culture, media and sport select committee, said he would table a Parliamentary motion calling for organisers to scrap the jagged emblem based on the date 2012.

Even London Mayor Ken Livingstone refused to back the pink and orange logo and even suggested that the Olympic organisers refuse to pay the 400,000 UK pound bill.

Olympic organisers beg to differ saying that the logo was "dynamic" and "vibrant." They have insisted that it will not be ditched.

Daily Mail

The "Thank You" campaign to get the 2012 Olympics was done much better than this load of rubbish. Honestly, who would wear a pink/orange shirt?

In response, many amateur artists and designers have submitted their idea of an Olympic logo. Many of these are much better than Wolff Olins'.

They really need to drop this jagged logo if they want to prevent further embarassment. First was their overbloated budget for the Olympics. Now it's their "girly" Olympic logo. What's next in store? London has about 5 years to go.

Update 6/7/07

favorite_2012_logo.jpg

This logo created by BBC web site reader Richard Voysey has been chosen as the readers' favorite in an online poll.

Over 22,000 votes were cast on a shortlist of six readers' designs.

Meanwhile, Michael Wolff, co-founder of designers Wolff Olins, which created the jagged logo, said it had not been "done justice" and blamed Olympic organisers for not publicising it properly.

Boo hoo. It still sucked regardless.

I wonder how many stores will sell both logos. I guess the London Olympic will try to stop that, but they cannot stop everyone.

is there a contest for a new logo design?

How are things at the moment with the design? I have to admit that I was suprised when I saw the first design. I was expecting a little more from London! Ah well, I guess we can't have everything. We've got the games maybe the logo doesn't have to be that great.

Thanks

I would like to create the Logo 4 the Olympic, i belive i can do it in a human way :).

Should get somone to print t-shirts and flags with the design on it and everyone buy it and wear it round london, that'd show how much more popular it is and show the nobheads that agreed the design they were WRONG!!!

I think the proposed London 2012 Olympic Logo is a complete embarrassment! Why is it Britain has to be the laughing stock all the time, the Eurovision Song Contest and now the Olympics, we might as well throw the towel in already cause we've already been embarrassed by this block pattern, i mean really, who in there right mind honestly think this logo is worth £400,000, who cares whether supposed "professionals" think its "dynamic" and "vibrant", well England doesn't its a joke and in my opinion i agree with many others that the
"logo created by BBC web site reader Richard Voysey" is the best the one with 2012 wrote into London, its original, artistic, and money making if thats what they want from it , and i would buy items with that logo on , i wouldn't buy something that my 3 year old sister can paint probably better , CHANGE IT!!!!

I just have to say that I am completely embarrassed at London's logo. Who in their right mind would agree to an atrocity like that? While I do not live in London presently, I used to, and I expected more from them. When I heard that London would be hosting the Olympics of 2012 I was more excited than ever.

If their logo is a sign of what the games will look like, I don't want to watch...

I love how those people who know nothing about branding, homage or truly progressive design will invariably demand we adhere to the blandness and safety of the status quo. You guys are SO right! Let's go with that utterly vapid and unremarkable "2012don" design from that other dude. What's so special about a global event like the Olympics in the grand city of London, anyway?

For a few good points on why this logo not only works but leans toward brilliance, check out www.coudal.com/olympics.php -- then come back, we'll discuss some more.

i think if they decide to ues the pink and orange 2012 logo, they could atleast change the colours so they are more london-ish, like have the union jack colours rather than pink and orange-where did they get that?

Im 15 and even i realise the london olympic logo is shit. For one how can u associate pink and orange with London or even England and two who wants a logo that looks like Lisa Simpson pleasuring a man. We should scrap this and go with Richard Voysey's idea, its clever inventive and incorporates 2012 without looking shit and using colours that are non representative of our nation

Thanks for listenin
