With the country in dire straits, at least there's a piece of good news today. Iraq clinched their first Asian Cup victory with a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Jakarta.

Captain Younes Mahmoud planted in a towering header for the winner after Saudi keeper Yasser Al Mosailem flailed despairingly at a corner.

Al Mosailem had earlier kept his side alive with a fine double save from Younes Mahmoud and Nashat Akram.

Iraq had an escape in stoppage time when Saudi striker Malek Maaz bounced a header on to the roof of the net.

Congratulations to Iraq for their historic win!

The AFC Asian Cup is a football (soccer) competition run by the Asian Football Confederation. The winning team (Iraq) becomes the champion of Asia and automatically qualifies for the FIFA Confederations Cup.

It was a wonderfully headed goal. They are deserved winners after biting their teeth to go true every single round being the underdogs throughout the tournament.

Iraqis cheated and dived - fouled Saudi captain twice studs showing ... and only 1 yellow was given if this was a african country the player would have got a red for it

And the corner from which the goal came was not even a corner

A Penelty was not called by Australian referee

That's the game. I have seen championship matches as well as regular matches where certain calls did not go the way they are supposed to, and penalties that should have happened, but the ref and linesman did not see it.

Either get more refs for the game, or implement camera technology. Don't tell me that the Saudis are above that. Any football player would try anything and hope to get away with it.

Not much excitement from the White House on the Iraqi success. I guess they didn't want to further upset the sore losers (Saudi Arabia).

That was a great goal. Mahmoud rocked and deserved that cup.

Now we need more wins like that :) Can't wait for the next world cup!
