Jihad: The Musical (a satire or just plain offensive?)
While in the UK...
Supposedly following in the footsteps of "Springtime for Hitler," the hilarious musical-within-a-musical of "The Producers," comes "Jihad: The Musical." It premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.
It tells the story of Sayeed, an Afghan peasant who is lured into training to be a suicide-bomber in a Western city. It doesn't show "respect" for fundamentalist ideas; it quite rightly pours acidic scorn on them.
It's not a Bush-Cheney hymn, or a Republican attack ad. It even makes fun of Fox News too.
Early reviews in the UK are mixed. Some do mention that the musical is trying to be satirical like what the Producers did with Hitler. Now it depends if people are going to laugh or take the musical too seriously. Attendance has been pretty full at their shows. It looks like the satire is against extremists and the exploitive media.
It is up to you to decide. Is it offensive or just plain dirty humour/satire?
