Don't skinnydip in the piranha pond

"We knew what we were doing was something new, and it would take some time for people to get their arms around it, but we were not expecting this visceral of a reaction,"

Duh! You start a web service for rating lawyers, and you're surprised when they sue you? That's like hitting a beehive with a baseball bat. And judges are lawyers too. You are screwed, Mr. Britton.

The judges probably won't be that hostile to the idea. Most bar associations now have their members fill out surveys/evaluations on local judges--usually anonymous, so the lawyers aren't tempted to overrate the judges before whom they appear. I can see a judge who likes the idea of someone doing to lawyers what the lawyers do to him. Especially if he's one of those judges that gets low ratings.

It doesn't seem to me like it would warrant that sort of hostility from attorneys. Unless they're worried because they *are* that crappy.

There are tons of sites that rate/rank this, that, and the next thing, whether they're qualified to do so or not. This is no different, and just like the other sites, I'd take it with a grain of salt. Most attorney referrals come by word-of-mouth, anyway, not a web search.

Jo, there's very little cost for a lawyer to sue somebody. It certainly doesn't have to do with justice. But if I were picking a lawyer and I saw he was filing such a frivolous suit, he would probably not be my first choice, because he's obviously thin-skinned and has time on his hands.

Referring an attorney is like recommending a restaurant to a friend.
