Networking

The networking we did in class today was a very new experience. I know that new experiences are usually difficult and seem abnormal, but this experience especially came hard for me. Frankly speaking, I get nervous when I speak to someone for the first time. I did speak with people today, but I was not so comfortable. I know that networking is one of the most important management skills that I need for my business career. Today, I felt that I need some practice in this area. Even though networking was not a pleasurable exercise, it was helpful in a sense that it made me aware of the importance of networking.

For people who are shy, or those who come from families or cultures where talking about yourself is considered rude, networking can seem especially difficult. Coming from such a family myself, I have taken the approach that I'm there to hear about and serve other people, not talk about myself. I've also changed the language I use for my own professional networking - I call it "community building." This feels warmer to me, and it makes it easier for me to present myself as someone who wants to help people make connections to others. I had to make an explicit commitment to myself to improve my skills in this area, and it has taken me years to get comfortable with it. If you make the effort, though, you'll probably find your life greatly enriched!

Yes, I totally agree with you. I was having hard time mingling with other people too, but after I spoke out at once, I got used to it. I felt comfortable with improving networking skills.
