Bathroom Walls

I examined the writing in the bathroom of my dorm and considered what it says about the students that live in this building. I asked myself, what are all the writings in the bathroom?

At first, I noticed the rape poster that was posted in each stall informing us about rape and sexual abuse. I thought that this poster shows that the staff is trying to inform the students and tell them how to behave. I thus inferred that the student life at Case is monitored slightly and that the staff wants a well-informed student body, which I believe they achieve through posting the rape posters. Also, in the bathroom, I noticed posters about maintaining the bathroom, such as to flush the toilets after every use. This shows that the students here, especially the guys, can be slobs and forget to flush the toilet. By posting these rules, one would expect the toilets to be flushed and the bathroom to be maintained in great condition. This is not entirely the case. For example, there have been multiple times that I have walked into the bathroom to use the toilet to find that the toilet has not been flushed for what seems like a long time. I learned that most of the students here, either forgot to flush the toilet, or did not read the posted sign and deemed it acceptable to leave the toilet not flushed. Finally, I realized that we placed a poster over one of the urinals, the poster is seen above, with the idea of keeping us entertained and the idea that we have created a “Bathroom Decoration Committee,” which most of our floor are a part of. The simple fact that we needed to place a poster in the bathroom for entertainment shows that the students here are easily bored and want to develop an environment of constant stimulation.

The “Bathroom Decoration Committee” was created by a bunch of us who decided that we were tired of reading the rape poster whenever we needed to use the bathroom and decided that we should place a novel in the bathroom. This we decided to label as “A Chapter a Week,” in the program we would place a chapter of a novel in the bathroom every week. The fact that we thought of this idea shows that the students in my dorm are interested in using every single second of their day to do something productive and to not waste time, developing the idea that we are not lazy and try to get all of our work done in the most efficient way. Finally, the fact that we want to put books in the stalls, shows that the students want to read and develop their minds through the reading of the books that are posted.

In my dorm, the writing in the bathroom develops the students as people and shows a lot about how we live our lives, and some of our ideas on how to maintain a high efficiency of work. I would like to see what the other dorms have in their bathroom, and how the students are in comparison to the writing in their bathrooms?
