nature vs. nurture -- can we put this debate to bed?
The Plain Dealer article last week quoted two different experts on the question of whether it makes sense to offer educational opportunities in the entrepreneurial realm. (Here's the article link, although it will eventually get archived. The author is Mary Vanac and the title is "schools for entrepreneurs"; the original publication date was Sunday, November 13, 2005.)
Perhaps the whole tone of the article implies an answer to the question of whether nature or nurture has more influence on individuals' entrepreneurial ability. Still, I find it frustrating, given that the research literature in this arena is quite mature, that both sides are still considered. (Here's a summary provided by Professor Jeff Cornwall of some recent relevant studies.) Like Cornwall, I find the argument similar to those about whether it's possible to train people to fill leadership roles more ably, which were finally put to bed in the late 70s.
I would much rather see future research focusing on what increases entrepreneurs' likelihood of succeeding, and what encourages them to invest in the success of their communities.
