where will you shop this Saturday?
Target? Wal-Mart? Starbucks? Olive Garden? Borders? Toys R Us?
Or Zagara's? Heights Hardware? Phoenix Coffee? Stone Oven? Appletree Books? PlayMatters?
It makes a difference, according to AMIBA. They invite you to participate in America Unchained, this Saturday, November 18.
"Imagine the impact on your community if everyone shopped locally-owned. You can stop imagining and help make it a reality."
Check out the links at the bottom of the AMIBA page to research studies conducted in Maine and Texas, about the impact on the community of shopping at independent stores rather than at chain stores.
For those who haven't explored the east side of Cleveland much, here are links to some of my favorite locally-owned businesses:
- Zagara's for groceries, flowers, wine, etc., on Lee Road in Cleveland Heights
- Heights Hardware, on Coventry in Cleveland Heights
- Phoenix Coffee, on Lee Road in Cleveland Heights
- Stone Oven Bakery and Cafe, on Lee Road in Cleveland Heights
- Appletree Books on Cedar Road in Cleveland Heights, and Loganberry Books on Larchmere near Shaker Square
- PlayMatters, a toy store on Shaker Square

May I also recommend
Heinen's at Green just South of Cedar (while it is a chain, it is locally owned by the Heinen's family)
Arabica next to Glidden House or near John Carroll (I far prefer their iced-mocha to that place from Seattle's.)
Mac's Backs on Coventry for new and used books.
"On the Rise" on Fairmount just east of Taylor for fresh bread, pastries and coffee.
Thanks Heidi!
We love On the Rise, too. It's owned by the father of one of my daughter's classmates!
