Alright, I'm back. Thanks for the shout out at the end of this one. I feel ... ummm ... famous ... or liked ... or something.
First I want to say that I love the addition of classic video game music at the beginning of the podcats. I was pretty proud (read:digusted) of myself that I got this week on my second guess. (Mega Man boss battle, yes I actually did look it up ... sigh.)
One of the things you guys were talking about is how the third party support for the Wii may turn ugly, and there would be "more Bratz games than Zeldas". Just another thing to consider, this is exactly what happened to the Playstation, and that's not necesarily a bad thing. What I mean is, back in the day when PSX was all the rage, Dreamcast had pretty much died, and 64 was kinda just hanging around, there was a flood of games in the Sony market. 90% of them were terrible, but the great thing was that there were a few that were made that were great that might not have gotten a chance if the market was being saturated by every idea that manufacturer's had. Ape Escape and Parappa the Rappa are titles which I think may not have made it to shelves had it not been for the "Screw it, we're making everything" mentality. Which Apae Escape, btw, is still a game which I think utilizes the dual analog sticks better than most any game I can remember, and I think potentially deserves a 10 in the history of gaming. One of the best PS1 games, for sure. Unfortunately this did also leave us with games like Battle Arens Toshinden 4 and Crisis City. Both very very terrible. Point is, I don't think third party flooding is necesarily a bad thing. It leaves the potential for some great original games to slip in with the piles of crap that might not otherwise get made.
On a related note, I hear that Kane/Miller Book Pubilishers is taking the first delve into educational Wii games by bringing their famous (infamous?) book Everybody Poops to Wii systems everywhere so they can take full advantage of the highly anticipated intuitive pooping mechanics. Oh man! I can't wait.
Have you guys heard of Dark Sector? (http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=292) If not, check out the gameplay trailer. It looks like it has some potential. Maybe it's just my love of the movie Krull and always wanting a blade covered boomerang type weapon.
Lastly, I was wondering if you guys caught wind of IGN's (new?) podcast. I am pretty sure it's a new thing for them, because they have only had like one or two episodes. I just thought it was humorously similar to this podcast, especially since their first episode takls about overated video games. (Edit: Apparently I didn't really look into it enough. It seems most game sites have podcasts already, and this one just started as a sister podcast to the site's main podcast. Never the less I thought it was funny they covered a topic you guys just recently covered.)
"Have you guys heard of Dark Sector?...It looks like it has some potential."
Gosh McFadden, you really do love games when you can brutally impale/slice/decapitate/rape your enemies.
You all know what would make all these horrifically realistic violent video games seem better in the public eye? Sex training video games! Utilize that Wii controller to its fullest potential!
I certainly do love me some violent video games. I mean, it's not commonly accepted to walk around with a giant boomerang sword and hurl it at people (whether they're shooting at you or not), at least not in this country. So I seek to satiate my urges else where, in the land of make believe.
And speaking of sex training video games ... you (whoever 'bunch of exclaimation points' is) couldn't have been more right, and yet so wrong. Almost immediately after the Wii's launch I saw purportings of a new Leisure Suit Larry game, complete with Wii strap on holster (yes, that IS exactly what it sounds like). Check it out for yourself: http://www.bbspot.com/News/2006/12/leisure-suit-larry-wii.html
On a similar note: I just reserved my copy of God of War Dos (I like to play the game in Spanish). I can't wait. One more week. One more week.
Frankly, every RPG from now on that makes it to the Wii should include menial task simulations--like eating, pooping and showering--all with intuitive Wii controls.
'Bunch of exclaimation points' is Matty!!!!! I figured it out all on my own. It's been too long since I have seen that sign off. Sigh ... I will be visiting good old Cleveland some time in April hopefully.
