Motivating Employees

As stated in "Getting Happy with the Rewards King" employees can be rewarded in ways other than money. The message is two-fold. First, it means that sometimes a manager who's trying to increase morale can better improvements with techniques other than cash bonuses. Second, it shows that cash bonuses may have minimal effects on certain employees who have other priorities in their life at a particular time. The conclusion I drew from the article wasn't that cash shouldn't be used, or that free food is the key to your employee's hearts, but that it is important to listen to your employees and truly understand them. People's needs change constantly, and if you stay in touch with those needs, they you'll always know what rewards to use to encourage optimal performance.
