SaraJean's Gov Doc of the Week for April 28, 2008

A few months ago, someone in the library remarked that Congress was wasting time investigating drugs in professional baseball when there were more important issues that needed investigation. Many people do not realize that the hearings about which one hears in the media are only a small fraction of what Congress does.

Here is a small sample of the Congressional hearings titles the library has received recently:

Gasoline prices, oil company profits, and the American consumer (SuDoc number: Y 4.C 73/8:110-51)

America's public debt: How do we keep it from rising? (SuDoc number: Y 4.F 49:S.HRG.109-985)

The passport backlog and the State Department's response to the Western Hemisphere Travel initiative (SuDoc number: Y 4.F 76/2:S.HRG.110-177)

Is OSHA working for working people? (SuDoc number: Y 4.L 11/4:S.HRG.110-40)

Green transportation infrastructure : challenges to access and implementation (SuDoc number: Y 4.SCI 2:110-27)

Protections for foster children enrolled in clinical trials (SuDoc number: Y 4.W 36:109-8)

Shepard's (LexisNexis Academic)

Download file (If you get gibberish when you attempt to play the file, see bottom of this entry for further instructions )

The two most popular resources that lawyers use to make sure a case they are citing is still “good law” are Shepard’s (Lexis) and KeyCite (Westlaw). These are fee-based services in the “real world.”

Currently-affiliated members of the CWRU community (excluding alumni, unfortunately) may access Shepard’s via the research database “LexisNexis Academic”.

Here is a video tutorial on how one would access the Shepard’s results for Bush v. Gore, 531 U.S. 98 (2000). (Download file before viewing it.)

Members of OhioLINK institutions which subscribe to the LexisNexis Academic database may also access Shepard’s from their list of research databases.

If you get gibberish when you save the file to your hard drive, do the following:
1. Right-click and select "save target as"
2. Save as file type "all file types"
3. Append the suffix ".wmv" to the end of the file name.

Empirical Legal Studies (ELS) Bibliography

Empirical Legal Studies (ELS) Bibliography

This resource can be of positive value for researchers seeking empirical support for their legal issues.

To be updated annually, the ELS Bibliography presently covers the most significant legal literature from July 2005 – July 2007, but plans to extend retrospectively to 2000.

Begun as a database to support the annual bibliography that appears in the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies (JELS), this service is hosted by the UCLA School of Law. It was conceived by Theodore Eisenberg, an editor of JELS,and Joseph W. Doherty, Director of the Empirical Research Group at the UCLA Law. The database evolved through efforts of law librarians from Cornell and UCLA.

A unique and generous aspect of this project is that the entire database file is available upon request.

(For more details about how decisions were made for inclusion in the bibliography, see the Database Description provided at the ELS Bibliography site).

SaraJean's Gov Doc of the Week for April 21, 2008

According to GPO, Volumes of the 2006 U.S. Code "are beginning to arrive in GPO's Library Services unit and are being prepared for shipment."

Our library should have the first two volumes, Volume 1 (Organic Laws, Title 1 to Title 5) and Volume 2 (Title 5 to Title 7) on the shelf by the middle of next month. When we receive them, they will be entered in the check-in record, which can be viewed in the library's online catalog (link to record above).
