Affirmative Action 9/28/06

Today’s topic was focused on diversity in the workplace. Part of the discussion focused around affirmative action and how it influenced hiring in the workplace. I was shocked when I realized how few people knew how affirmative action works and who benefits the most from it. After I spoke about who benefits the most and who is classified under affirmative action I think I shocked a few of my classmates. I had explained to them that the number 1 and 2 benefactors of affirmative action were white women and war veterans respectively. After our initial discussion we read a case study dealing with discrimination and proceeded to follow up with discussion. This lasted until the end of class and by the time I left I had a feeling that most of the class now had a better understanding of diversity and discrimination.
