Dittrick Medical History Center hols the history of the medical past....
The Allen Memorial Medical Library contains the Dittrick Medical History Center. This center holds the history of the medical past through a collection of rare books, museum artifacts, images, and archives. Archives can be a variety of things. Archives range from personal things like photographs, letters, scrapbooks, diaries, to more business things like computer files, financial records, memos, or meeting minutes. All archives are a collection of historical records that can be used for research. Archivists make archives possible and allow the public to access the archives more easily for research opportunities. Archivists collect, asses, organize, and preserve information. How does all this archiving relate to the portfolio keeping we are going to do?
One of the archivists at the Dittrick explained how much time went into creating the archives. We are going to be like archivists with our own work. As an archivist you receive a huge number amount of paper whether it is records, images, or files. And we have a collection of our writing whether it is our blogs or our essays. An archivist then has to decide what stays and what goes. We as portfolio keepers have to decide what is valuable enough to revise, make better, and put in put portfolio. Archivist base value on what they think people are going to want to see in the future, what can be a valuable research tool later. We portfolio keepers we want to show variety along with our writing strengths. This is not easy; for either the archivist or the portfolio keeper. Archivists also have to arrange the records and describe them. As a portfolio keeper you have to also organize your work and reflect on it.
There are many archival manuals and rules on how to archive properly there is a set of standards that has to be followed by archivist. The archivist has to introduce the collection, describe who it is of, describe what is in it, and many other things. As portfolio keepers there are many different types of portfolios and there are not any set rules you must follow. However, there is a lot of planning that goes into portfolio keeping. You have to save and label your work so you can revisit it and possible revise.
There are many similarities between archives and portfolios, they both what to preserve and share something. There is one major difference however. A big piece of portfolio keeping is reflection, not matter what kind of portfolio it is it needs a reflection. You must reflect on how you grew or changed as a writer. What could be considered a reflection part of archives is the research people do with them.
