The 3 hour graduate and undergraduate course and CEU (30 CEUs) opportunity is being offered through Southern Illinois Carbondale School of Social Work and the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University.
What can I expect from the trip?
The program provides a unique opportunity for educational and recreational excursions to New Delhi and Mumbai (Bombay) and Jaipur, as well as visitation at local and regional NGOs. Participants will learn about projects involving education, international funding, government initiatives and use of information technology for social development. The study abroad course will explore innovative approaches to social development in India and a draw parallel to that of the United States. Students and participants will become familiar with Indian social development and social policy issues in regards to poverty alleviation, non-formal education, prostitution, HIV-AIDS, multicultural aspects of health care, international adoption and application of information communication technologies in addressing social problems. The trip will include guided tours to neighborhoods, field-action project sites, social and educational institutions and government establishments. Daily lectures by practicing social workers, policy advocates, field workers, health care professionals, government officials and eminent Indian scholars and researchers associated with Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Delhi School of Social Work and the National Institute of Information Technology. How much will the trip cost?
The approximate fee for the program is $3,900.00 not including tuition $400 for CEUs. The cost includes airfare, in-country travel, three meals a day, double occupancy three star accommodation as well as instructional materials. Space is limited and you will need to send an nonrefundable deposit of $250.00 (to Debby Jacobson, MSASS, room 108), check made out to Southern Illinois University in order to hold a spot.
