From the abstract:
Adverse child outcomes tend to be concentrated in neighborhoods with adverse conditions and risk factors. However, studies have yet to explain how exactly neighborhoods influence outcomes for
children. This paper presents a framework for understanding neighborhood by delineating three possible pathways of influence: behavioral influences;definition, recognition, and reporting; and selection. Neighborhood differences in child maltreatment rates are used as an illustration of this framework.
