“The Legal Necessities of Aging” (2 CEU’s)

As individuals approach age 65 there are many decisions that have to be made. Planning for options to support their preferred method of care as they age is challenging, and many approach the process hesitantly. In addition, annual adjustments to health insurance programs are expected, but in 2011 the Affordable Care Act has created new options for care and modified existing alternatives to the Medicare program. This lecture will examine estate planning and health insurance options for older populations including wills, powers of attorney and Medicare health insurance. Presenting this lecture is Patricia R. Frutig, J.D., in private practice and Semanthie Brooks, Director of Community Advocacy at Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging.

Homeownership reflects the single most important if not sole asset for most American families. Since the onset of the foreclosure crisis, however, U.S. housing policies have retrenched support for low-income homeownership as an asset building tool. Using longitudinal data from participants in an innovative, homeownership counseling and asset building program in Denver, this lecture will focus on the meaning of homeownership as a catalyst for wealth building in low-income, minority families. Presenting this lecture is Professor Anna Maria Santiago, Bevis / Haynam Professor of Community Development.
