Plain Dealer: County Invests in Pre-K, City Cuts Programs

2008 KRA-L Scores

A study by the Center on Urban Poverty and Community Development based on 2008 data concluded that children who had been enrolled in pre-kindergarten programs sponsored by Cuyahoga County scored better in kindergarten readiness than children who attended other programs or did not attend preschool. This study is mentioned in a November 27, 2011 article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

In 2012, Cuyahoga County will be increasing funding to pre-kindergarten programs by $1 million. However, at the same time, Cleveland Metropolitan School District plans to close 41 preschool classes in a need for budget cuts.

The 2008 study by the Poverty Center as part of a long-term collaboration with Invest in Children showed that both the county and city pre-k program increased kindergarten readiness and a year later, Cleveland public pre-school students outscored the average for Ohio. There is great concern on how the loss of pre-K programs may effect the city.
