MGMT 250
The overall experience of this class is unforgettable and original. This class was my first solely lecture and discussion based class with no exams, but a lot of papers and discussions. My basic thought of management was just hiring and firing of workers. But this idea changed after leaning in this class. There was so much to management than I thought. HR simulations, blogs, individual learning plans, mock interviews, and many more, I learned so many different aspects of management. Also, this was the class that I started to really feel confident in discussing with classmates. Since this class requires a lot of group presentations and discussions, talking was much necessary. Overall, this class was one of the best experiences I had this whole semester, and I will persist to keep up with management courses by taking MGMT 251 next semester. Happy Holidays!
Blogging Experience
The blogging experience in our MGMT 250 class was very memorable and brilliant. There were times that I was chased by the deadlines, but posting the blogs always helped me collect and organize what I had learned in our class. The blog was the place for me to express my opinions and thoughts, which I could not easily pursue in the class. Now that I reminisce about this experience, there are so many things that I did not cover. But I still feel very proud of myself maintaining this blog. Reading the comments left by fellow classmates was unforgettable experience as well. I sometimes even waited for someone to leave a comment in my blog. Overall, I appreciate this blogging experience very much and it will be unforgettable.
Final HR Report
The MADS Apparel company finally came to an end with the writing of final report. Our group consisting four people, divided the work equally to finish this assignment successfully. We talked about every action we took during the simulation, including the outcomes and the goals that we have achieved. My part was to find relationships among the HR programs and observe the outcomes. I figured out that there is a direct correlation between the accident rate and the safety program budget when compared with industry averages. Having a safety budget near industry average will yield an accident rate below the industry average. Overall, this HR simulation in this semester was an incredible experience to have. Also, our group was very well correlated with each other that it was much more interesting and enjoyable.
Final Learning Plan
Writing a final learning plan was very pleasant experience for me. I started this project very early, which I had a lot of time to think about my future. I started out by explaining everything about myself, from where I was born to where I am right now. Then I wrote about the near future goals that I wanted to achieve, which was to graduate from Case Western Reserve University. My ultimate goal is to become a president and CEO of a company. I wrote down every step I will take to achieve this goal. As I was writing my learning plan, I never felt so proud of myself planning out my future. Overall, writing an individual learning plan was definitely one of the most valuable opportunities that I had experienced in this MGMT 250 class.
Firing Tom Mendola
Tom Mendola case was discussed in our class few weeks ago. This case was about a high school dropout who was an unproductive worker. He was warned several times by his superior and was even transferred through the departments upon his own request. However, these adjustments were not good enough for Tom Mendola. He was still lagging in his quality of work and had no passion. Finally, the superior decided to fire Tom. But Tom pleaded for his job, talking about how much his family was depending on him. Making a decision in this case was very difficult. However, I believe that the repeated poor performance is good enough reason to let him go.
Goal and Action Planning
One of the goals in MGMT250 course is to enable each student to build skills in evaluating career and employment options, and goal setting and action planning to achieve personal and professional goals. For the individual learning plan, we were given 17 post-it papers to fill out our goals for the future. I wrote down goals such as, courage, wisdom, happiness, wealth, relax, success, and many more. These goals were modeled into SMART and START NOW goal frameworks, which guided me to focus on my goal. I am very eager to continue and see how many goals I can achieve in my near future.
Annual Report
In our HR simulation, a year had passed and it was time for an annual report. This year was a great year for us, which we managed and operated as we planned in the beginning. Our wages were always higher than the industry average and morale rate was very stable. We were very excited to help this company grow and reach new upgraded levels of success that MADS Apparel has never reached before. Writing this report required great amount of teamwork, and with the members of my team it was done very swiftly and easily.
Training Methods
Our class was divided into a few different groups. Each group was given many types of training method topics to discuss and present to the class. My group's task was to explore ‘training by examples’. We found out that this training was done by giving and showing the employees examples to learn and see. This method would be useful in the hands-on industries that use factories and that require precision. The interesting fact is that I am also a 'training by examples' learner according to the LSI. I believe that training by examples can be used in any circumstances.
Feedback Discussion
Our class got a chance to talk about feedback few days ago. In my point of view, feedback always works in a good way even though I sometimes get negative feelings from it. What I mean is that feedback may hurt my feelings but it definitely allows me to see in different perspectives that I could not have thought of. Feedback is necessary for me to acquire from as many people as possible. I believe that this is the only way for my work to be perfect and improve in my work.
Harrah's Casino Case
Harrah’s Casino Case was very interesting because it was very similar to our HR simulations. Also, reading the real life examples, I learned that employees were the most important aspect of the company. With more developed and organized incentive plans, Harrah’s could be fair and exciting. Giving out bonuses and sharing company stocks could also fulfill employees’ demand of earning more for their extra hard work. In addition, with a vacation or health care service, workers would feel that they were being cared and overlooked by their own company, not being ignored like other places. Such a connection in the company would stimulate the production efficiency and the better customer service. With this feeling in mind, employees would focus more and have stronger spirit in their jobs.
My Values
There are countless values that I consider as significant in my life. The most considerable one is health. I totally think that being healthy physically and mentally means being able to hold any other values. When people maintain their mind clear and body healthy, they can work efficiently and effectively. Cooperation is the second most substantial value to me. In the world, lots of people live together. People often contradict as well as benefit each other, which help people to know and learn how to deal with others, among the people with different characteristics. Cooperation also highly promotes efficiency, such as splitting work into various parts. Responsibility is also needed in this compatible society. In this society, they should respect each other. Being responsible is one of the ways to respect and to be respected by others. In addition, discipline is extremely important. There are many people who get distracted by everything around them. At that moment, discipline is what helps people concentrate on working. A discipline may bring a great happiness, while chaos can bring people painful journey. To be courageous is to stand up for personal beliefs. People should express what they believe in. By being courageous, they learn how to support their ideas and persuade others in polite ways. In addition, adventure, helpfulness, creativity, logic, and cleanness are also the essential values for me to obtain.
MBTI
I think that I am rather introverted and have the intuition perception than extraverted with sensing perception. This means that I am more drawn to my inner world, work out ideas by reflecting on them, focus in depth in my interests, imaginative and verbally creative, and remember specifics when I relate to a pattern. However, the Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) online test gives me the results that I am actually extraverted with sensing perception and thinking judgments along with judging. This means that I am practical, realistic, and decisive. Also, I am able to quickly move to implement decision, organize projects, focus on getting results in the most efficient way possible, take care of routine details, have a clear set of logical standards, and systematically follow them and want others to also. I believe that all of these aspects are my assets since they are all valuable qualities of me. Because the MBTI test is very different from what I have had in my mind, I am not sure which one really describes me. Though, I feel like I have little of both aspects.
Learning Style Inventory
According to Learning Style Inventory (LSI) I am the assimilator out of the accommodator, diverger, converger, and assimilator. Assimilator is in between abstract conceptualization and reflective observation side. This means that I am good at systematic planning, manipulation of abstract symbols, and quantitative analysis. People with this orientation value precision, the rigor and discipline of analyzing ideas, and the aesthetic quality of a neat, conceptual system. The strengths of the assimilator are planning, creating models, defining problems, and developing theories. Excess being castles in the air and no practical application, the deficiency is unable to learn from mistakes, no sound basis for work, and no systematic approach. Assimilator is basically good at organizing information, building conceptual models, testing theories and ideas, designing experiments, and analyzing quantitative data. I think that assimilator well describes my basic learning style. I do learn best when I organize and plan beforehand. Without any preparation, I often get lost and get frustrated by it. So the best support for me when I learn a new material will be the well organized manual or tutorial.
HR Simulation Team
In our Management 250 class we were assigned in a team for the HR simulation. This simulation is an experiential tool that requires students to make human resource and management decisions. Our team includes, Michael Farrell, Adeyemi Sobowale, Daniel Park, and Sitar Bhatt, who is our team leader. We decided our company name to be MADS by adding the first initials from our names. We are very excited to work on this simulation and I hope that we get through it well without any troubles.
Mock Interview
I had a mock interview with Specialized Bicycle Components Company on September 22nd in Sears Building. Overall reflection after the interview was that I had a great time with the interviewer. Not only it was great to have a practice interview with real company representative, but also learning my mistakes and weaknesses after the interview was great help for me. One thing that I would pay most attention to be an effective interviewee is to focus and pay your full attention to the interview. Not only should you listen to the interviewer, but you should also listen carefully to yourself. The mock interview was great experience to have before I actually start applying for the jobs.
Brand New!
This is my first entry on my blog and I am sure excited!
Today I tried to create a business card template. I was excited about designing my first business card, but had no idea about how I should make it. Fortunately, my friend knew how to use the Photoshop program, came over and helped me out. We had visited many websites which had samples of general business card. After all, we figured out that it would be more business-like if we added case logo on my card. Plus, I have been proud of being a case student!
We first got the logo from the case website and tried to reduce the size so that it could fit on my card. The card did not need too much information or complicated design. We thought it would be a quick and easy job but it actually took more than an hour. When the card was finally finished, I felt so proud of myself thinking that I already became a businessman.
