What is the Case Compute Exchange?

This is a Co-branded service offered by Case, OneCommunity and Grid Dynamics that is aimed at offering students, faculty and staff an opportunity to use temporary virtual Linux server(s) to host any type of application that will run on this environment. With every account there is also remote file storage available via webdav or ftp with lightning fast speeds. Your storage account will be created by default with 2 gig of storage unless you specify a need for a larger amount in your request.

For more information on what you can do with the Case Compute Exchange, see some a short list examples listed in the page below. This is just a sample list, once you receive your account that will allow you the ability to SSH to your server and install anything you wish. See following link for more information about getting started. http://computexchange.case.edu/html/drupal/?q=gettingstarted

Registration Steps

1) Click the following link and enter your information to register:

http://computexchange.case.edu:8080/iodeb-portal-alpha/app?page=pages%2Fconsumer%2FRegistration&service=page

After your account is created and the exchange administrator has approved the request, you will be able to login to the exchange to create your server configuration. The approval process can take as long as 24 hours or as little as 10 minutes. You will be notified via email when your account is ready to start using the exchange.

2) How to use the exchange – click link to view the manual about how to login for the first time and create your account

3) Provide Feedback on your experience 2 ways after you have successfully signed up and used the service:

         a) Survey: http://computexchange.case.edu/html/drupal/?q=survey

Well it has been an interesting month but the Case Compute Exchange is almost here. The Case Compute Exchange will allow users to lease hardware, software and storage for free during the duration of the pilot. It also provides a great interface for ITS to provision and managing these services to the Case community. This 3 month pilot slated to run from April to July will allow users to sign up and use virtual Linux servers able to run any software, remote data storage, and high performance processing and memory intensive applications. For a sneak preview of the types of things you can use this pilot for see the following wiki article on the Case wiki: http://wiki.case.edu/Grid_Dynamics_pilot

More information to follow next week about how to actually sign up and start using the pilot. Drop a line to nlambert@griddynamics.com if you want to discuss ways the pilot can be useful to you or your user group.

We are getting closer to the actual launch date of the pilot. We currently have the alpha release of the exchange portal that will facilitate the management of the accounts between Customer --> Exchange --> Provider.

We are expecting to launch the pilot website at the end of next week where students, faculty and staff can request to become pilot participants. More information will follow regarding the pilot website and instructions on how to sign up.

Finally, we are working with OneCommunity on the hardware specifications for use by the pilot site. We are expecting to receive the hardware by the end of next week, 2/2/07. From there will we need about 1 week to configure the hardware for use with the pilot in time for launch date of February 12th.
