CWRU Libraries and Partners Win $552,908 Grant to Promote Librarianship
Kelvin Smith Library, the University Circle Libraries and the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science received an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) award in the amount of $552,908 to recruit undergraduate college students to the profession of librarianship. The idea was first conceived by Joann Eustis, former University Librarian at CWRU, as a way to promote collaborative projects among UCI Libraries. The project, "Exposure and Experience: Development of a Pre-professional Program to Recruit College Students to the Library", was one of 38 Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program grants awarded by IMLS. Betsey Lantz, Director, Ingalls Library, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Gail Reese, Associate Director for Collections and Personnel, Kelvin Smith Library, will be co-directors of the grant with Greg Byerly, Associate Professor, Kent State University School of Library and Information Science.
The Kent State School of Library and Information Science, Case Western Reserve University Libraries, and the Cleveland Art Museum are partnering with nineteen academic and special libraries to recruit undergraduate college students. Project goals are to attract minorities to the library profession and to direct good candidates to particular subject areas (e.g., art, health sciences, music) with shortages of qualified people. This project is expected to produce an effective, professionally developed recruitment plan and a curriculum designed to introduce undergraduates to librarianship and provide a structured and supervised library workplace experience. The project will reach an estimated 72 participants. Other UCI Libraries/Organizations that are participating are: Cleveland Botanical Gardens, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Siegal College of Judaic Studies, Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Health Sciences Library, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Institute of Music, Cleveland Orchestra, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Judge Ben C. Green Law Library, MSASS Harris Library and University Archives.
