KSL Mentors Future Connections High School Students
Congratulations to 5 high school students who completed their 4-week Future Connections Program at University Circle, working with 20 staff mentors at the Kelvin Smith Library. Martin, Miles, Shantel, Shawn, and Terry are students from area high schools (Whitney Young HS, Shaw HS, Maple Hts. HS, Jane Addams Business Careers HS) who've been working at KSL for career awareness, new skills in creativity, research, and digital literacy skills.
This is the 9th year that Kelvin Smith Library has mentored a group of these Future Connections students, with library projects to help them build diverse skill sets that ultimately are transferable for their academic and future careers. One project this year took them from bar-code & call numbers all the way to actively participating in the daily computing & service operations that during this academic year brought 25,670 OhioLINK items to Case users, and also loaned 30, 269 Case items to OhioLINK partners.
KSL Future Connections students gained insight about the service goals, innovations, technologies and mission goals of many library departments. Each of the 5 students worked with staff in the library's Samuel B. and Miriam K Freedman Digital Library, Language Learning, and Multimedia Services Center, and contributed 4 pages of content to a booklet "A Graphic History of East Cleveland Ohio" for the SnickerFritz Community Time Capsule project.
At the Recognition Program, the students remarked on how they appreciated the "great experience" and "had a good experience working with you on something I can relate to." Besides saying that they "learned so much", one student added that "this library is an information warehouse!"
