Calling All Book Lovers: Octavofest 2012 Events!
Octavofest, an annual celebration of the book and paper arts, is once again returning to Northeast Ohio. This year, the Kelvin Smith Library is gearing up for Octavofest at our Open House with a presentation by Michael Ruhlman, internationally known food writer, author and chef. Come hear Ruhlman’s special presentation and enjoy food samples from local restaurants.
The Kelvin Smith Library has also teamed with the Rowfant Club to present an exhibition and memorial of the work of master bookbinder Jan Bohuslav Sobota. The exhibit will open with a symposium on Sobota’s work led by Robert Cheshier, Ladislav Hanka and Nicholas Basbanes. We invite the community of book lovers in Cleveland to join us to view Sobota’s fascinating vision for the art of the book and the living tradition of craftsmanship that he fostered.
Interested in learning more about book art? Attend a workshop led by local artist and bookbinder, Gene Epstein, on the art of folded book sculpture. Come view a demonstration of how old books can be transformed into beautiful pieces of art, and then experiment with creating one yourself! Books for folding will be provided, or bring along one of your own.
