Off the Shelf- Episode 16: Ballet Russes Style with Mary Davis

Ballet Russes Style

Returning to Off the Shelf is musicologist, author, and chair of CWRU's Music department, Mary Davis. I'm happy to welcome Mary back to the program. She joined me back in May, 2009 when we discussed her biography of Erik Satie.

Mary's most recent book returns to fin de siecle France and looks at the celebrated Ballet Russes, the troupe's equally celebrated leader Sergei Diaghilev, and the impact he and his group's work had on society and fashion in Paris.

In addition to leading the Music department, Mary is also associate director of the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities and coordinator of, along with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the American Music Masters series. This year's event, which kicks off on November 8, 2010, features the music of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew.
