centered on users' needs

FRBR works especially well with literature, music, special collections, serials, accompanying material

book is an entity. Attributes of it include cover, pages, etc. Relationships among books
240 MARC field.
245 has text that you have

FRBR. One big entity with lots of relationships. Not display item by item.

Shakespeare – entity. Attributes: dates, main time of productivity, variations on name
Hamlet – entity. Attributes: page numbers, publisher, pub place, size, date of publication

3 entities in FRBR: group 1 (description/work), group 2 (creator/person/corporate body), group 3 (subject)

GROUP 1
Work – idea. Intellectual idea/creation author/creator will present. E.g. the cello suites by Bach
Expression – e.g. gone w/ the wind is the work, French translation is the expression. Subfield h, gmd from 245. E.g. cello suites by bach is the work, "unaccompanied cello suites, yo-yoman, perf p1983. CBS masterworks" is the expression
Manifestation – physical embodiment of expression of work. E.g. 3 sound discs. Play, movie, performance. Manifestation is the carrier itself, such as microfilm, e-format.
Item – copy number, where it resides. E.g. copy 1 of 3 sound discs (which is the manifestation).

FRBR seeks collocation
Current catalog by relevancy. FRBR is a tree diagram.

e.g.:
MLS web site (W1). Work
Report (W2), statistics (W3), minutes (W4) within MLS web site. Also works. To express the relationship…
W1
W2 W3 W4

e.g. encyclopedia of human. Vol 1 – biology. Vol 2 – physics
We create a record for the work encyclopedia, and for biology, and for physics. The encyclopedia is the container record. Analytics.

Alice in wonderland – work
Videorecording – manifestation
Dramatization – expression
Summaries and commentaries – expression

RDA
You don't need to repeat data
Content description, not display (users don't care about cm, pp)
240 is linked to 100
make heading for original
expression

FRAD authority data. 1xx's will link to this (how is not determined yet)

GROUP 2
Group 1 is tied to group 2.

Access points:
Work is created by a person or corporate body (1xx)
An expression is realized by a person or corporate body
A manifestation is produced by a person or corporate body
Item is owned by a person or corporate body

1st decision – description
2nd decision – access points

GROUP 3
Subjects (6xx)
Subject can also be group 2 (person, corporate body)

General material designation (gmd) = manifestation
MARC 240 = expression (format, version)
Manifestation terminology will be standard; must use the terminology

ADDITIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
(See Barbara Tillet. Wrote on FRBR first back in 1994)
Work and expression are abstract; manifestation and item are concrete
Collocations occur at work and expression level; cataloging occurs at manifestation and item level
Work has title, author, corp, version. You can collate on these.
Manifestation and item are just descriptions.
Users look at manifestation and item
System will collate at work and expression

Serials. Work well for FRBR. Successor (sequel, succeeding work)
OSU used numeric code at end of call numbers to reflect expression (e.g. adaptation)
"Teacher guide" is expression, not manifestation
edition is an expression

Expression-to-Expression
Common link is same author/creator
e.g. Walt Whitman revised Leaves of Grass

Work-Expression
Work: Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment.
Expression: author's original Russian text
Expression: Translation by Smith

COLLOCATION
PATHWAYS TO RELATED WORKS – can include collection managers
