final thougts on the class
I had in a great time in management 250. I did not know what to expect when I signed up for the class. I think I thought there would be a lot of tests and bookwork but there wasnt, and I loved that. I thought that putting us in teams to work all semester was a great format. When we are in the workplace some day as managers that is how it is going to be. I also thought that all of the professors did a great job, especially Professor Powley. he was a really nice guy and always willing to help students out. I thought he had a strong command and led lectures very well. Bottom line, i really enjoyed this class.
evaluations
I thought that the evaluations we had to do on each of our team members were very hard. Our team worked so well together. Each memnber completed about the same ammount of work and we truly did work as a team. There were never any problems throughout the entire project. so I gave each of my team members the highest ratings I could. I told my team leader I was going to this and he said if that is how I feel than I should. I do not know if that is wrong, but that really was the fairest way I could grade one another. I guess my only fear is that the professors may not take me seriously because I graded like this. But this was honestly te fairest way I could do it and that is just how it ended up.
a good team
As we just finished up our final report I want to comment on how effective our team worked together. Each week we met and went over incidents and quarterly reports. We worked together and never had any misagreements with in the team. Our team leader used the internet to always get a hold of us and we never had any problems with getting work done. I think that the HR simulation project was the coolest part of managment 250. We worked as a team and i felt like a real manager. I thought the best part of the assignment was the incidents. It was really cool to analyze different approaches to problems. I think is great experience for when an incident like one in the assignment really happens in real life as a manger. To conclude, I thought this assignment was great.
mendola
After reading the case, I say just fire him. He has gotten numerous chances and management has been nice enough to let him switch jobs. When I am a manager, if someone feels uncomfortable with thier job I could see myself saying thats to bad buddy. I think when you hire someone for a job they are supposed to do that job. If they do not do the work then I say fire them. In this case, it was a factory worker and the position is very replaceable. I understand that the kid is in a tough situation with his family and everything, but he needs to accept his responsibilty and do what he is supposed. Management gave him chance affter chance to improve and he did not. My only defense for him would be that he is just a kid and maybe needs a little guidance, like a mentor or something. Other than that, I do think that he should be fired. How is any manager supposed to taken seriously if they let behavior like this continue.
more about the learning plan
I was very mad about the first part of the learning plan. I thought it was graded very hard, and it was a lot to write. Then, we were assigned part two. The professors said to be creative and elaborate on ideas so I dd just that. After part two was done, I ended up having a twenty-two page paper. I thought nothing of this until the announcement was made that the paper should only be fifteen pages. I think that should have been announced at the very beginning of the assignment. Now I have to go back and try and cut out almost half of my paper while trying to make it sound normal at the same time. I know the professors have to grade a lot of these papers but I feel it was unfair to notify us at such a late time during the semester.
grade curve
I think that the curve that was talked about today in class is very cool. The past couple of assignments we have had, inlcuding the learning plan have been graded very hard, in my opinion. I think this curve will help a lot of students get the great that they feel they deserve. Sonce there is no tests in this class I think it might be harder onb some students. A lot of people are just book smart and do great on tests while others do not do that well on tests but can write papers very easily. I think this curve will even things out for the students that may not be the most comfortable when it comes to writing.
career interviews
I think being the interviewer is much more fun than being the person on the other side. I had a great time doing my career interviews. I chose to interview to people that have a lot in common with me, but at the same time are very different than each other. One is a very successful businees man. Not only was he successful in business, he did it while raising a family. The other is a student that just graduated from business school and started his own company. He does not yet have a family, and is striving to make his business succeed. I think that using two very different people like this showed me a lot. I compared thier answers, and I learned a lot about each of them. They were very helpful to me, and I had a great time with that assignment.
harrah's Casino
In class, we discussed the case of Harrah's Casino. Also, I had to write a paper on the topic. I think that Harrah's messed up by not combining programs. I think if they would have offered a gainsharing and profit sharing incentive plan, things may have gone better. Also, I think that a huge part of increasing morale and productivity is making employees feel that they are important. I think that Harrah's can do this by offering stock options to thier employees. Stock options may put a slight sense of ownership in some of the employees minds. These employees may feel that they own a little bit of the company, and they will want to see the company succeed. I think stock options for employees should have been the most important part of thier plan.
Learning Plan
I felt the learning plan was a lot of different topics crammed into a paper. The outline of what the paper needed to be consisted of a lot of different subjects. It went from career interviews, all the way back to the MBTI. So I guess the paper was kind of like an overview of everything we have done thus far. I did not think that the paper was a bad assignment, I just felt that it was stuff that I have already said. The next part of the paper is due soon, and I still only have one career interview. But, even after I get my other interview, I see myself talking about the same things for part two of the paper. We'll see though, maybe I am wrong.
training
I think that training is a very important part of any company. I would want my new employees to feel as comfortable as possible during thier training experience. I just think that this makes employees more capable of learning quicker. Whenever I feel uncomfortable, my mind is never where it needs to be. Also, with the technology available today, computers will be a large part of training. Most big companies use computers for a lot of things. I think that using a computer program to train a new employee is fine, but I dont think that should be the only traing they get. I think that co-workers and managers need to personally monitor the progress made by employees during training, and then begin to train them personally as well. This way, the computer is not able to lie, and the new employee may feel a little more important because she or he is getting some attention. This could increase morale, and succeed in offering better training to new employees.
ethics
In class, we discussed what is ethical when considering a career opportunity. My professor said that leaving one job that was originally undesirable, for another job that fits your career is unethical. I do not agree with that. I think that people should do whatever it takes to pursue their career. For instance, if I do not get a job in the career that I want to be in and I take a job at McDonalds to have some money to live on, I would quit that job in a heartbeat to take an opportunity that is better for me. I do not see how that is not ethical. Also, if an employer asked me what happened to that job at McDonalds, I would just say that I made a career move. What employer would look down on someone for that?
hr simulation
I just want to comment on this project again because it is going very well for our group. I think that te internet has been the best possible way for to communicate with each other. We use email and AOL to set up times to meet and go over details of our next assignment. Our group leader, Paul, does a great job in letting us know what has to be done, and then we do it. Our main focus is on morale. When we first met, we chose this. I did not really know if I thought that morale was that important, but now i do. I see what a good working environment can create, and that is success. I think that the morale in our group is excellent, and that our achievements are showing that. As a manger some day, I will always remember how important morale is.
first entry
I think that the line of work is the main determinant on age in the work force. The Days Inn example does not portray a tough line of work. It is not like being in a labor union. In the Days Inn scenario, I do believe that older people were the right chice. All of the displays show that old people made tremendous strides as the job prgressed. Also, they were much more likely to still be a member of the Days Inn staff as time went on. Younger people's statistics showed that they were more likely to leave the company as time went on. In conclusion, I really like old people. I enjoy talking to them and almost all old employees I know treat people with the up most respect. GO OLD PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
