Pulitzers
I anticipate for Apr 20th every year when Pulitzers for excellence in journalism. This year there were two finalists from my home town paper Plain Dealer. They were Regina Brett for commentary and Diane Suchetka and feature writing
Description of their work is given below
Diane Suchetka’s five-part series was about a mechanic whose arms were severed in a shop accident and who had them reattached. Pulitzer judges called “Fixing Mr Fix-It,” which ran in December, a “harrowing tale” and a “disciplined narrative that takes readers on the man’s painful, personal and physical journey to recover.”
Regina Brett was a finalist for commentary for the second year in a row with her columns about releasing evidence to defendants in criminal cases and passing on a breast cancer gene to her daughter.
You may agree or disagree with Regina but she does adhere to high standards of journalism, who doesn't get beaten down by nasty comments to her stories on the Plain Dealer website
It was sad both of the missed Pulitzers, I congratulate them for coming so close. Regina next year it is going to be third time lucky.
Leno and Cleveland
This past wednesday when I was in hospital, I saw the Tonight Show of Jay Leno while channel surfing. I saw the segment called Jaywalking, in which he said LA has more talent Cleveland, and asked people walking on the street to exhibit talent, the talent show that followed was pathetic and ridiculous.
I want Jay Leno to come to Cleveland in early summer so he can enjoy Cleveland Orchestra perform at Blossom, enjoy local talent perform on the steps of Rock of Hall of Fame along with gentle splashing of waters of Lake Erie, spend wednesdays at Wade Oval, attend the Baroque Orchestra or Jazz Orchestra or any number of orchestras in town. He can also stop at Cleveland Institute of Music or Oberlin College to listen students perform.
He can go to plays at Cleveland Play House or Great Lakes Theatre Festival, both these places have launched careers like Alan Alda and Tom Hanks.
Gallery Hopping can be great idea at Murray Hill, Downtown and Tremont.
Last but not the least he can watch Cleveland Cavaliers led by local talent James beat LA Lakers to win NBA title.
Visit to Cleveland will change his notions of talent
Missing Water Front My View
http://blog.case.edu/bac2/mt-tb.cgi/1283 , This entry assumes that everybody who complain about lack of water front are lazy sacks, who need help to what is happening in Cleveland. No we don't, we have discovered Gordon park and edge water park despite the fact these two places are effectively concealed by I 90 and route 2.
All I said and was acknowledeged in the above mentioned blog was the need for more access to water front.
Regarding the river front the above mentioned blog says directs us to a website to the cleveland rowing team. I thought a big city with an excellent water front will have excellent an trail along the river and some quays, where row boats can be stored and used. While people at Sherwin William river front office ave a nice park along the river front and a basketball court to play on during summer. We ordinary mortals have to pay thru our noses to sit thru shooters to get a glimpse of river front if the ben's advice taken
My single point is " River and Lake Front are natural resources that have to be made available to people and not concealed ad make peple discover"
Missing water Front
It remains a mystery, why Cleveland goes great extent to hide its various water fronts. The lake Erie is made accessible in patches at various points in the Cuyahoga county, probably the powers that be have decided, due to cold northern weather, the access to water should be restricted. Another mystery is the river front, there is no significant usage of the river front except for industrial storage, there seems to be no significant plan for river front. It is high time the processs of discovery of the water bodies, if found and put into good use.
P S : It is an oft repeated topic I believe one more voice will add to the momentum to create something.
