Postcard Contest Winner

Congratulations to Professor Florin, who swept our summer postcard contest with his entries for Furthest Distance and Funniest! Florin traveled to Europe this summer, and his stops included Germany and Switzerland! Munich, Germany was officially the Furthest Distance from the cafe this summer. His cute and personalized quips in his postcards declared him the clear winner of the Funniest Postcard category. Florin always has a friendly smile and a coin for our tip jar in addition to a taste for double espressos. The SAGES Cafe is happy to hand the prize over to such an enjoyable and regular customer.

We would also like to congratulate our Runner-up, Michelle Mazala, who traveled to Toledo, Spain. Both Florin and Michelle are invited to stop into the cafe for a personalized (and drinkable) thank you for participating in our contest!

So long, Sagista Eileen

How to say goodbye?

After two joyful years of serving the Case community coffee and smiles, the time has come for me to embrace a new adventure. Starting this Fall semester, I will be attending Lund University in Sweden for a Master's Program of Language and Linguistics, specializing in German.

My last day here is fast approaching (July 31st!), and any kind of end generally brings a bout of reflection and a slew of various emotions. I must first say how very thankful I am for the cafe's wonderful customers with whom I've been lucky enough to share stories, views, nuggets of knowledge, and compassionate moments. There are a great number of people I've encountered at the university that have inspired me, both personally as well as professionally, to keep on with my love of languages and passion for an international sense of community. These two years of cafe management have provided me with invaluable experience, for which I must especially thank Ken Klika, Vera Tobin, and Rebecca Kaaikaula for all their guidance. Suffice it to say that I will walk away from the SAGES Cafe with numerous wonderful memories and a forever fond recollection of my time working here.

Should anyone wish to keep in touch, I will keep up with my email at ekelbach@yahoo.com and also be chronicling my experiences abroad in a new blog.

With this, I leave the cafe in the very capable hands of our good Sagista Melissa and our excellent student staff. And with a huge, sincerely heartfelt THANK YOU, I wish all my customers and coworkers the best in all their own endeavors just as I am continuing onward with mine.

Tea and yoga, take two!

It seems like all anyone can read about in the paper these days is our dwindling economy. People everywhere are making cuts in their budgets just to make ends meet until this financial crisis evens out. You've crossed off dining out and added a part time job. May we suggest a yoga class to relax and rejuvenate? Too much money you say? Well, what if the class was FREE and you even got a ticket to grab a cup of tea afterwards for just a buck? That's right, the lovely Marcia Camino has returned for a sixth summer of Yoga on the Quad, and the SAGES Cafe is happy to provide her eager yogis with refreshing tea. All participants will receive a coupon for a medium hot or iced tea for only one dollar after every class. Anyone who brings a friend to yoga class can enter themselves and their guest into a drawing to be held the last day of yoga. The winner receives a free lunch at the cafe! The lunch will include a canned soda, an Aladdin's pita pizza and two baklava fingers.

So come one, come all! Relax, refresh, recharge! Yoga and tea is the perfect combination to start your summer with a fresh mind and spirit. See you soon!

We hope for your hellos!

Summer break is creeping swiftly up, and we find ourselves basking in the ever-increasing sunshine yet scrambling to say our Spring goodbyes until Fall.

The staff at the cafe isn't so good with "goodbyes." We prefer to say a bunch of "see you laters." We also lament that we won't get to interact with many of our favorite people this Summer, which is why we encourage...with prizes...to write us this Summer!

Participate in our SUMMER POSTCARD CONTEST. Simply write to the Sagistas at:

SAGES Cafe, Crawford Hall
10900 Euclid Avenue
Cleveland, OH 44106

Every postcard we receive will be posted on a display board here in the cafe to share with everyone, and prizes will be rewarded in three categories:
-Farthest distance from the cafe
-Best postcard written while sitting at another Peet's location (you must prove it somehow)
-Overall funniest postcard (...really, we're the LOL types. Send us lots of laughs.)

We wish all the students the best of brain power on finals and look forward to hearing about everyone's Summertime adventures.

Free Coffee for Earth Day

Next Wednesday, April 22nd, the SAGES Cafe will celebrate the fruits of the Earth and the harmony between all its inhabitants by giving away free 8 oz. cups of Peet's Fair Trade Blend.

Although we all know the excellent quality of the Peet's Coffee and Tea served at the cafe, many do not know that Peet's is committed to sustainable partnerships with all their coffee cultivators.

According the the Peet's web page for the Fair Trade Blend: "In addition to the price designed by Fair Trade to deliver a livable wage to its members, Peet’s pays a premium to all of our suppliers for producing coffees of superior flavor, as well as ten cents from every pound to the non-profit group TransFair USA for promoting Fair Trade." Makes the coffee taste that much better, doesn't it?

To learn more about Peet's commitment to the Earth and our global community, visit their website.
And to celebrate the global community, join us Wednesday for a free cup of Fair Trade coffee!

Hit the Books...and the Beans

Spring Semester is zooming to a close! Anticipation is in the air for warm weather, Summer vacation, upcoming travels, and a break from the intensity of the school year. It's all so close, yet just beyond that one last hurdle--finals.

We at the cafe would like to help the Case student community get over that last hurdle and into the free zone. This is why we're offering special discount prices for students to selected Peet's Coffee drinks on the two university designated reading days: Tuesday, April 28th, and Wednesday, April 29th. Espresso shots will be $1.00, a small coffee or a coffee refill will be $1.00 each, and for those with a sweet tooth, small lattes (flavors included) will be $2.00 each.

Don't forget, the cafe offers a plethora of study perks: plenty of outlets for laptops, wireless internet, quiet study space, meeting/group study space, and an array of snacks, food, and non-coffee beverages.

See you there!

Journeyings

The eastern corner of the cafe was transformed last Thursday by an all-day reading of Vergil's epic poem "The Aeneid."

At the event sponsored by the Department of Classics, Vergil's story of a Trojan hero was read in turns by a number of participants including Case faculty, staff, and students, as well as Shaker Heights High School, John Hay High School, and Notre Dame Academy in Toledo, Ohio. Artwork was displayed all day from Professor Martin Boyle and students in Arts 101/201 from the Studio Art Program.

Thank you to everyone who participated for refreshing the cafe atmosphere through art and Classic literature!
Please look at this entry's continuation for more photographs of the event.
