The Latest on the Case IM System
1. Oracle Messenger has been officially retired. This actually happened a few weeks ago, but I didn't get around to announcing it until now due to vacation, etc.
2. Because of (1), we've now got the Wildfire server listening for SSL connections on the correct SSL XMPP port (i.e. 5223). If you're using a client that needs to use the old SSL port, adjust accordingly. We're also working on getting a real SSL certificate installed, which should stop iChat from giving errors upon making SSL connections.
3. The "change-the-JIDs" move I keep talking about is going to happen. This may also be combined with some other changes that will improve reliability. Stay tuned for details.
4. We have now purchased the Enterprise version of Wildfire. Because of this, we will be soon distributing a customized version of Spark.
5. I'm also starting to look at the FastPath functionality in the Enterprise Server. This will allow specially-defined workgroups to do "click-to-chat". I've already got one group interested in this, which partially came out of a conversation I had during my vacation(!).

messenger.case.edu beta update
A couple of quick updates:
1. Just before the holidays, it came to my attention that port 5223 (the old SSL port for non-TLS clients) wasn't working right. After some troubleshooting, I determined that the problem was that the Oracle RTC process was listening on that port on all interfaces, and that Wildfire was not able to open the port because of that. If you're using something that has to use SSL instead of TLS (like iChat, for instance), go back to using port 5234.
2. As I briefly mentioned in the last post, the Jabber domain will be switching from "messenger.case.edu" to just "case.edu". I'm not sure when yet. We'll need to have special SRV records set up in DNS for server-to-server connections before this can happen. We'll also have to take the service down and do some SQL magic on its database.
3. I noticed 63 users were online at one point today, so we're starting to see some non-ITS users. I'd like to really get some good stress-testing in, but Jive is indicating we shouldn't have any problems.
If you have any feedback on the new IM service so far, either leave a comment here, or send an e-mail to im-admin@case.edu - we'd love to hear from you.
