Case Western Reserve University's alumni and friends continue to provide generous support for research and scholarship even amid challenging economic times. The university's philanthropy totaled $108.7 million, marking the second consecutive year that the university raised more than $100 million. The amount also sets a new record for the second-highest total in the university's history.
In addition, the university's annual alumni fund drive raised $7.6 million, the highest total in university history.
"We are tremendously grateful to our graduates and other supporters for the faith they have shown in Case Western Reserve University," President Barbara R. Snyder said. "We are especially humbled to receive this level of giving in light of the financial challenges the nation has faced since the fall."
The university is in the first year of implementation of Forward Thinking, the strategic plan that identifies the campus' highest priorities for the next five years. These include academic collaborations in areas such as energy, human health, and sustainability, as well as initiatives designed to enhance the student experience. Several of the university's largest gifts focused on these areas.
Other multi-million-dollar commitments to Case Western Reserve in the 2009 fiscal year included a $5 million commitment from the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association; an anonymous $2 million donation to support biomedical engineering; and a $2 million commitment from the Weatherhead Foundation and the Albert J. Weatherhead III Foundation.
This year's fundraising total is more than $5 million greater than in Fiscal Year 2008, when the university raised $103 million. In FY 2007, the amount was $68.8 million.
"This progress reflects our graduates' dedication to their alma mater as well as our supporters' recognition of the value our research and scholarship to Northeast Ohio," said Bruce Loessin, Senior Vice President for Development and University Relations. "Our faculty deserve enormous credit for doing the kind of work that inspires such confidence in the institution."
Case Western Reserve University recently received a four-star rating (out of four) by Charity Navigator, a national guide that measures the efficiency and sustainability of charities objectively to assist donors with giving decisions.
