MGMT 250 Entry #15

I strongly dislike judging/ evaluating my peers because I don’t believe that I’m in the right position to do so. When bosses evaluate their employees, they use their trained skills and superior knowledge to deliver constructive criticism and fair judgment. How can I evaluate a person on the same level as me? Our skills are obviously comparable because we’re on the same level, but who’s to say who is better? I try not to be partial when I evaluate my peers, but sometimes I give very generous scores because I don’t know enough to judge them more seriously. Other times, I grade too harshly because I’m afraid of being too lenient. Either way, evaluating my peers is something that I need to work on and become more comfortable with.

I completely agree and find myself in the same position. I have never been good at it and do not feel comfortable doing it. What I find especially hard is being able to move past any personal relationship I have with a person and objectively evaluate them.

Svetlana,

I also feel unsure when asessing my peers, but I think that being on the same level as others makes it a little easier to judge their effort and input. I think that knowing what I am capable of and comparing it to what others are doing makes a relevant opinion. I think that judging others who are not my peers is much more difficult in most situations.

Despite this, I agree that being on the same level as others makes judging difficult, but only because of my relationship with them.

Peer evaluation can be very difficult. However, it can be very helpful in assisting people in becoming more productive team members.

I agree with your input about peer evaluation. I also feel uncomfortable when I have to evaluate a peer's performance in a group project. However, the only way to become more comfortable with this task is to get more experience. It is hard to give one of your friends a poor evaluation even though you know their performance has not been the best. Hopefully with more peer evaluation exercises, I will have an easier time evaluating my peers.
