Days 2-3: Getting Ready for NQE
DEXTER's software and hardware is shaping up well for the National Qualifying Exam. Members of Team Case have been diligently simulating DEXTER in situations that we'll likely see during NQE and the competition. DARPA officials are tight-lipped about the exact composition of the test, but we do know that there will be many stunt drivers out on the course making DEXTER's task challenging. Above all, safety is our number one priority - unlike previous races, DEXTER will be interacting with live drivers as well as the other robots for the entire duration of the race.
I've been working hard to make sure that DEXTER's sensors and computer systems will be reliable. I swapped out a LIDAR (laser scanner) that has been giving us intermittent problems, likely due to dust contamination inside the lens. I also upgraded the boat fans that assist in cooling our computers and I improved the RADAR driver so that it will restart if it hangs during operation. We're also mounting a stereo camera to the front of the robot to help detect chain-link fences that DARPA has warned us about.
We passed our safety test this morning, so we'll keep working hard to keep the robot behaving properly!

Bobby Lu,
Thanks for sharing the link to the video at http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/34578/113/. I've heard from a few people that the videos don't work in Internet Explorer 7. TG Daily is working on the problem but recommends that users use Firefox instead of IE.
