Construction begins on Aug. 2

Case Western Reserve University, MRN, Ltd and University Circle Inc. announced today that the first phase of Uptown, a mixed-use residential and retail project at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Mayfield Road, will begin on Aug. 2.

Uptown has closed $44.5 million financing from private and public sources to complete phase one of the project, including 102 housing units and 56,000 square feet of retail, restaurants and entertainment.

This project continues its momentum with the recent announcements regarding the engagement of Field Operations, an international landscape architect firm, to design a plan for the public spaces of the Uptown including the plaza and entertainment street. In addition, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), recently unveiled its design by London-based Foreign Office Architects and its decision to relocate at the intersection of Mayfield and Euclid, the gateway for this project.

“Uptown will enhance the vibrancy of University Circle and engage the greater community,†said Barbara R. Snyder, president of Case Western Reserve University. “John Wheeler, our senior vice president for administration, and Russell Berusch, vice president for commercial real estate, deserve much of the credit as they have remained committed and provided the support in bringing this project to the exciting milestone of breaking ground.â€

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center slated to open soon — and an experienced new coordinator at the helm.

Elisabeth “Liz†Roccoforte, diversity program manager in the university’s

“I want to do high-quality programming and events that will reach faculty, students, staff and alumni,†Roccoforte says.

Roccoforte had a similar position at the University of Cincinnati, where she also served as an undergraduate instructor in women’s studies. She also served as the program director of adult and professional development at the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio.

She plans to work with campus departments and student organizations. “The goal is to lay the foundation and get the center up and running as both a resource for the broader community and a safe place for the LGBT community,†she explains. Plans include the establishment of an LGBT library, as well as conversation groups.

Jane Daroff, a social worker with University Counseling Services, has touched the lives of many students since she joined Case Western Reserve in 1991.

Her efforts are being recognized with a 2010 President’s Award for Distinguished Service.

Daroff, along with two other employees, received the recognition during the Staff Service Awards. The event, held last week, also recognized employees with 10, 25 and 35 years of service with the university.

The program was a collaborative effort between the
Department of Human Resources, the
Staff Advisory Council and the
Office of the President.

"Think beyond the possible truly describes how people here do their work," said Case Western Reserve President Barbara R. Snyder. She added that the event was a celebration honoring colleagues who have reached significant milestones. “Thank you for all that you do every day. We help each other, and that’s how we get things done.â€

A campus-wide committee, made up of faculty and administrators with experience and interest in international education, has made a recommendation to the provost for an initial structure in the Office of International Affairs (OIA). The OIA was created last spring as an outcome of the university’s strategic plan,
Forward Thinking.

The International Planning Committee (IPC), which is chaired by James Kazura, professor of international health and medicine and director of the Center for Global Health & Diseases in the School of Medicine; Janet McGrath, associate professor of anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences; and David Fleshler, associate provost for international affairs, met last week and overwhelmingly recommended a structure in which the undergraduate study abroad office and the office of international student services would become part of the OIA. In addition, the Planning Committee recommended increased personnel in the OIA, in order to assure that the university’s internationalization process would move forward quickly. The recommendations were the result of the work of an infrastructure working group chaired by Bo Carlsson of the Weatherhead School of Management.

Provost William A. "Bud" Baeslack III is expected to accept the recommendations.

Harvested produce is now available in all Bon Appetit cafes at Case Western Reserve University.

Discussions on a farming partnership between Case Western Reserve and Bon Appetit began last fall. Members of the SAGES class made recommendations to the University Farm committee in late April.

Ana Locci, University Farm director, said the goal of the farming initiative is to provide new educational opportunities to faculty and students; to study local food production in a sustainable way using mostly organic methods; and to deliver fresh food and herbs to the campus, and eventually the area surrounding the University Farm.

The alumnae, dedicated to the empowerment of women, witnessed the grand opening of a special gift they provided to current and future students: Mather Park, Case Western Reserve University’s softball field.

"This is a great day for all of us," said Sandra Malek Vodanoff (FSM '59), final president of the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association. "We're sure she's (Flora Stone Mather) with us in spirit…cheering on the team."

More than a dozen members of the alumnae association joined Case Western Reserve University President Barbara R. Snyder, the softball team and university friends and supporters at the official ribbon cutting ceremony on April 7.

The Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association announced in 2008 it would transfer the balance of its endowment to Case Western Reserve to
support enhancing the student experience.

The naming of Mather Park, located on the north side of campus, was one of those gifts.

At yesterday evening's Distinguished Lecture event, President Barbara R. Snyder announced a $1.25 million leadership gift from the Callahan family to endow the university's annual Distinguished Lecture in honor of Francis Joseph Callahan Jr.

"We believe that naming the Distinguished Lecture in honor of my father is a fitting way to pay tribute the legacy of Joe Callahan—a man dedicated to distinction in all he does," said Cornelia Callahan Richards, Callahan's daughter and co-trustee of the Callahan Family Foundation.

Joe Callahan is chairman emeritus of Swagelok, a leading fluid system manufacturer headquartered in Solon, Ohio. After graduating from the Naval Academy, serving as project officer on the world's first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus, and earning two engineering degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Joe Callahan began his Swagelok career in 1958 at what was then Crawford Fitting. Joe Callahan quickly rose to the top of the organization and instilled his overall philosophy of respect and quality service. He amassed 23 patents in his 40 years at the firm, and Swagelok companies grew to more than $1 billion in annual sales.

"Our father's business success was grounded in his belief that everything should be done 'first-class,'" said Timothy Callahan, son and co-trustee of the Callahan Family Foundation and a Case Western Reserve University trustee. "He has always said, 'Find the best people, give them everything they need to succeed and treat everyone with respect.'"

When Adrienne Allotta recently needed emergency child care for her toddler son, Jackson, she turned to a new program available to Case Western Reserve University faculty, staff and students.

She found help through the Temporary and Back-up Child Care program, which launched last fall. The program places caregivers with families on a full-time or temporary basis.

Allotta, associate director for career development at the Weatherhead School of Management, used the service for two weeks while her regular child care provider recuperated from an illness. "I don't have family in town, so for my situation it was a perfect solution," she explained.

The Temporary and Back-up Child Care program—along with the

Benefits-eligible faculty and staff are able to participate in the initiatives.

The
