Case Western Reserve University is in the Top 10 of "Saviors of Our Cities: A Survey of Best Neighbor College and University Civic Partnerships."

The survey results were recently announced at the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities conference in Philadelphia.

The survey is an extension of Evan Dobelle's original survey and ranking of civically engaged colleges and universities that appeared in 2006. Dobelle is president of Westfield State College. The list's Top 25 academic institutions were selected because of their positive impact on their urban communities. Factors such as revitalization efforts, cultural renewal, economics and community service and development were considered.

Program Linked to Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Research of Urban Health Needs

Case Western Reserve University (CWRU)
School of Medicine proudly announces the establishment of the CWRU Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (PRCHN), a collaborative research center to address common health issues faced in disadvantaged urban neighborhoods in and around Greater Cleveland.

The PRCHN will also serve as a regional research and public health data source. It is being developed with an initial $790,000 grant from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to support both the infrastructure of the center and one demonstration research project, with the potential to receive up to $1 million annually for up to five years through additional CDC funding opportunities. The Center's goal is to engage a wide spectrum of disciplines both within the university and the community to foster a unified vision for community-based prevention research.

"The new PRCHN provides a framework for fostering partnerships within urban neighborhoods to develop, test and implement effective strategies and interventions in preventing and reducing the burden of chronic disease," said Elaine Borawski, PhD, Director of the Center for Health Promotion Research at the medical school and the PRCHN's Principal Investigator and Co-Director. "By collaborating with neighborhood residents, leaders and community organizations in Greater Cleveland, we hope to address the significant environmental and lifestyle issues that serve as barriers to good health."

A 560-volunteer corps from Case Western Reserve University will hit the streets of Cleveland for the university's traditional day of service,
Case for Community Day, Friday, September 25. This year, the campus broke a record in filling all the volunteer slots at 60 project locations in less than a week.

Among the 60 project sites is a campus neighbor—the Abington Arms Apartments, 11501 Mayfield Road. Residents will open their doors for an opportunity to receive help with some fall cleaning.

The 152-suite, 13-story apartment complex has benefited from volunteer efforts since the service day's inception in 2002.

Susan Persing, Abington Arms' property manager, says the number of resident requests for volunteer help continues to grow each year. This year 40 residents have requested help from 20 volunteers who have signed up to work on this project. Depending upon the amount of work required, Persing says, about 75 percent of the resident requests should be filled by the volunteers who will be at the apartment complex for the afternoon.

"When the volunteers finish, our residents have a real feel-good feeling about their newly cleaned apartments," says Persing.

Campus members who've already signed up for Case for Community Day projects should give themselves a round of applause: a registration record has been set.

Although there are still a couple of weeks left until
Case for Community Day on Friday, September 25, all service projects are filled, according to Latisha James, director of the Center for Community Partnerships.

"What a wonderful display of the university's continued spirit to serve. This is the best registration effort we've had," says James. "It typically takes three weeks for projects to be filled, and we have done it in one week."

While all of the service projects have volunteers confirmed, campus community members who have not had an opportunity to register can still give back by donating to one of the numerous donation drives being held the same day. People are encouraged to donate unused personal computers and cell phones, bring in canned foods, clean out their piggybanks for the Pennies for Peace effort, or sign up to give blood at an American Red Cross Blood Drive.

Put a price tag on the benefits of volunteering, and it might read contented, happy, and $20 and more an hour.

Faculty, staff and students can share in those benefits when they give back to the Cleveland community during the all-campus service day called
Case for Community Day on Friday, September 25.

Angela Schluchter, the student service coordinator in the university's
Center for Civic Engagement & Learning (CCEL), spent three years in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica before coming to the university. She lived and worked in a small village of 500 people. She taught English and computer classes and helped parents and the local school board establish community computer center.

She has seen the "empowering" experience that volunteering can have in supporting people who are trying to make a positive difference.

An estimated 15 percent (11,799) of Cuyahoga County's children are living one step away from homelessness, according to a new report released by Case Western Reserve University's
Center on Urban Poverty and Community Development at the
Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. These children live with a grandparent or someone else and about 75 percent of the children without their parents.

The 70-page white paper, "Family Homelessness in Cuyahoga County," looks at new factors in determining homelessness by considering the numbers of people living in doubled-up housing situations with family and nonfamily members and the impact it has on them. It is one of the first comprehensive assessments of homelessness for families in Cuyahoga County.

The paper, written with support from the Sisters of Charity Foundation, can be found
online.

"We need to better understand the extent to which people are doubled up in the county," said Cyleste C. Collins, the lead author on paper.
