Treu-Mart Fellows Give Back to Community

The Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations, a nationally recognized program, serves as a resource to the development of nonprofit leadership and community development. The programs offered through the center provide a greater depth of understanding of a topic not only through substantive content grounded in the latest research, but also through application techniques and support that enables participants to apply their knowledge to make meaningful positive changes in their workplace.

One of these signature initiatives is the Treu-Mart Youth Development Fellowship Program. Since its inception in 2004, more than 10,000 youths have been positively impacted by the work of the fellows.

Treu-Mart Fellows are professionals who:

See the strengths and gifts in young people
Commit themselves to providing youths the support they need to thrive
Work with middle-school-aged young people during out-of-school-time in the Greater Cleveland area
Seek to continually learn and develop their own skills and talents

Receive Nonprofit Awards from Mandel Center

Recipients of the 2009 Leadership in Nonprofit Management Award and Organization Innovation Award, presented by the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Case Western Reserve University, fill special niches in social services and cultural arts in the Cleveland nonprofit scene.

This year's recipient of the Leadership Award is Stephen H. Hoffman, president of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, for his contributions and service as a leader of Cleveland's prestigious philanthropic and social service organization. The Organization Award will go to the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) for its innovative work as a community organization, including notable achievements in audience participation and drawing national attention.

Hoffman and CIFF will receive the honors at the Mandel Center's annual Nonprofit Awards event on Tuesday, September 29, 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Ballroom at Park Lane Villa in Cleveland. Members of the community are invited to attend the reception, which will feature keynote speaker Diana Aviv, president and CEO of Independent Sector—a national leadership forum for America's nonprofit and philanthropic organizations. During her talk, Aviv will explore the cascading effects of the recession on the nonprofit community at the local, regional and national levels. Hear about ways to transform the nonprofit sector's difficulties into an opportunity for the sector to reinvent itself.

Recent Graduate Wants to Make Her Mark in Cleveland, Contribute to Region

Emily Fox has no plans to leave Cleveland now that she has graduated from Case Western Reserve University. After three years, she left campus with the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Master of Science in Social Administration (M.S.S.A.), and a certificate in nonprofit management.

Fox has lived in the area since the age of 13 when her family moved to Shaker Heights from San Francisco. The recent social work graduate wants to be part of the solution to rebuild the city instead of taking flight to other places.

"Cleveland is a place that needs people. I like the challenges it offers," she says.

Janice Eatman Williams is Recipient of
President's Award for Distinguished Service

Janice Eatman Williams wants Case Western Reserve University students to not only become familiar with their academic lessons, but also the cultural classroom that surrounds the university.

"We have all of this," she says while pointing out different museums and resources in University Circle. To help students who will be spending several years as part of the campus community become familiar with the area, she leads walking heritage tours of the University Circle, Glenville and Hough neighborhoods.

Eatman Williams, assistant director of the Center for Civic Engagement and Learning, is a recipient of the President's Award for Distinguished Service. She received the award during the annual Staff Service Awards Brunch last week. The awards program was a collaborative effort between the Department of Human Resources, the Staff Advisory Council and the Office of the President.

at Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations

After nearly eight years at the helm of Case Western Reserve University's Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations, Executive Director Susan Lajoie Eagan has resigned effective of June 30. John A. Yankey, the Leonard W. Mayo Professor Emeritus of Family and Child Welfare at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, has been named part-time interim executive director and will serve through December.

"Susan Eagan has been a dynamic leader for the center, and her work has been an immense asset to the university community," says Deputy Provost Lynn Singer. "We're very fortunate that John Yankey has stepped in to this position, and we know that the center is in very good hands."

A national search will be initiated for a permanent executive director of the Mandel Center during the fall semester.

Yankey, who came to Case Western Reserve as a faculty member in 1973, participated in the establishment of the Mandel Center and previously served as its interim executive director and director of community services. Since his retirement in 2005, he has continued to teach a strategic planning course. He has authored dozens of management studies, publications and research reports.

Research ShowCASE to Feature Dozens of Interactive Displays

Although Research ShowCASE is known for its hundreds of poster displays, the event also features interactive displays. The Case Western Reserve and local communities are invited to check them out during this year's event, which takes place Thursday, April 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Veale Convocation Center.

"A record-number of researchersâ€”more than 600â€”from Case Western Reserve University and its affiliates will celebrate a broad range of ground-breaking studies," says Cindy Barker, director of Research ShowCASE 2009, which is expected to draw several thousand people during the daylong event.

Have survivors of Hurricane Katrina been forgotten?

Not by 20 students from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, Weatherhead School of Management, Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences and the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations. They plan to pick up hammers and nails—and a few shovels and hoes—over spring break, March 8-15, when they return to New Orleans to continue efforts to rebuild the city in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The students will volunteer for New Orleans City Park.

Case Western Reserve University Earns 2008 Pillar Award for Community Service

Case Western Reserve University, which offers over 500 community outreach programs for nearly 600 community partners, is being recognized with a 2008 Pillar Award for Community Service. This is the first time the university has received the award, according to Latisha James, director of the Center for Community Partnerships.

Developed by Smart Business Network and Medical Mutual, the Pillar Award honors businesses and individuals dedicated to making Northeast Ohio a better place to live. The Pillar Award embraces a broad definition of community service, including charitable giving, volunteerism, pro bono work and other forms of giving back.

The university—along with other award winners—will be honored at a ceremony this evening. Case Western Reserve President Barbara R. Snyder is scheduled to accept the award on behalf of the university. In addition, winners are featured in the December issue of Smart Business Cleveland and Smart Business Akron/Canton, on newsstands now.

Case Western Reserve University wins Northeast Ohio Environmental Award

Case Western Reserve University's sustainability efforts have earned the institution a Northeast Ohio Environmental Award.

The program, sponsored by the Biodiversity Alliance and Dominion, recognizes and honors the outstanding achievements of organizations, businesses and individuals in a wide range of environmental initiatives throughout the region, and pays tribute to those who have demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence, leadership and accomplishment in the fields of community, business, primary/secondary education and higher education. Award winners received a plaque and a cash award of $2,500.

National NACC meeting comes to campus this week

The Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations will have the opportunity to showcase its new Bellflower Road building when the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council (NACC) brings its spring retreat and meeting to Cleveland. The meeting will take place at the Mandel Center, which is also called home to the international headquarters of NACC.

"This is a milestone for a nonprofit center to have its own building," said Amy McClellan, NACC's executive director -- and the meeting host for leaders from some of the 47 nonprofit academic centers around the world. When the Mandel Center dedicated its new building last November, it became the first center to have a freestanding facility dedicated to nonprofit management education.

Professor Steven Feldman to discuss American-Chinese business relations

American and Chinese business relations have been placed under a magnifying glass following last year's food and toy recalls and the ethical and cultural differences will be viewed with more intensity with the approaching Olympic Games this summer in Beijing.

The relations and challenges are also at the center of Case Western Reserve associate professor Steve Feldman's research.

Feldman spent the first part of 2007 in the People's Republic of China as a Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics through the Fulbright Scholars program. He will talk about his firsthand experiences teaching and carrying out international business ethics research in the Far East on Thursday, Feb. 28. " China Lessons: A Fulbright Experience in Shanghai" will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Toepfer Room in Adelbert Hall. Lunch will be provided.

The Mandel brothers—Jack, Joseph and Morton—were honored as the first recipients of The Advocate for Social Justice and Leadership Development Award from the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences and the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Case Western Reserve University. In recognition of their family's commitment to educate leaders in the field of social services and nonprofit organizations, the Mandels received the prestigious honor during the MSASS and Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations diploma ceremony at Temple-Tifereth Israel on Sunday, May 20.

Grover "Cleve" Gilmore, MSASS dean, said the honor would only be given when the most selective criteria have been met.

"There was never a doubt about who should be selected as the lead recipient of our highest honor," said Gilmore. "In the community of philanthropists, the Mandel family stands alone. Their high level of involvement and long-term commitment to the education of leaders in the social services and the nonprofit community is in its own right, a reason for recognition."

Case students turn the world into a global classroom

Students use Spring Break as a unique learning experience

Education has gone global for Case Western Reserve University students participating in spring trips to the Ukraine, the Netherlands, Turkey, Kenya and the Dominican Republic.

This spring, 44 undergraduate and graduate students traveled to the Netherlands, with another 21 participants headed to Kenya and five students to the Ukraine through the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences (MSASS) spring abroad program. The weeklong intensive study trips explored social service issues in the various countries. This year's enrollments in the spring abroad trips were the highest since the program started several years ago, according Grover C. Gilmore, dean of MSASS.

Each trip had a different focus that reflects social issues pertaining to the country and the faculty leader's expertise. For example, the students traveling with adoption expert Victor Groza examined changes in the social service system in the Ukraine that now favors moving children from institutions to permanent homes.

The Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations is scheduled to move next year from rented space in the basement of the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center on Euclid Avenue to a two-story structure being built on Bellflower Road, just east of Hessler Court. Request for Proposals for Strategic Planning Consultation

The Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Case Western Reserve University will again offer area nonprofit organizations assistance in designing strategic planning visions.

Since the Mandel Center began this program in the nonprofit community, more than 90 organizations have been served with over $2 million in estimated contributed costs.

Nonprofit management graduate student teams work under the supervision of Professor John Yankey, Ph.D., a leading national expert in strategic management issues. Teams of students are assigned to work with selected organizations from September 2006 through April 2007.

In order to be considered, nonprofit organizations must attend one of two pre-submittal informational sessions on July 18 or July 25.

Professional development will benefit youth throughout Northeast Ohio

Learning how to bring out the best in middle school youth and building on their strengths are on the agenda for 14 Treu-Mart Youth Development Fellows, named by Case Western Reserve University's Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations.

"This is a passionate and phenomenal group of youth development professionals. They have impressed me with the quality of their dedication, driven by the true meaning of 'KIDS are our future'," said Patricia Heilbron, the director of Mandel Center's Treu-Mart Youth Fellowship Program.

Youth service professionals become Treu-Mart Fellows after being nominated by a community organization. One can also be nominated by a member of the community at large and then complete an application that is followed by an interview with the selection committee that include Heilbron and members from the community and Case faculty.
