One of the primary tenets of
Digital Case is provide free and open access to it's contents. Â While this continues, there are special circumstances where a layer of security is necessary. Â There has always been the ability to dark archive content, which essentially makes it "invisible" while still managing the long-term storage of content. Â Now Digital Case has the ability to secure content while exposing the metadata and making the item discoverable, yet only providing access to those with a valid Case ID (via
Single Sign-On). Â This can open the door to a whole new world of content in Digital Case that is for the campus community only.

>More Interface Upgrades: Image Display & Keyword Filtering</title

A recent update to the
Digital Case interface has been rolled out, intended to make finding collections, as well as browsing through image collections, easier and more enjoyable.

Image Templates

We just rolled out the new Image layout for the
WPA Prints collection, which now shows thumbnail images in a grid view for easy browsing. Â In addition, you are now able to modify the view of the collection by changing the sort options and the number of items viewed per page.

Filter By Keyword

Previously, you were always able to filter a collection by the first letter of the title. Â But what if you only knew a word in the title, but didn't know the actual first word. Â Now you can filter the collections based on that keyword. Â Search still continues to be a great option, but this is a quick and easy way to narrow down an ever-increasing number of collections found in Digital Case.

Digital Case is already a great online resource for doing research, particularly with it's use of
permanent URL's, but it just got a little better.

Digital Case now supports most citation applications, including
Zotero,
EndNote,
Refworks, etc. Zotero is quickly becoming a leader in citation management as a seamless browser plugin that easily integrates with Firefox and works with various other types of online resources, such as the
Case Catalog, Amazon, etc.

(Zotero Citations Available when Browsing Objects)

Digital Case also offers an
RIS formatted citation download which can be used with many other citation applications such as EndNote, Refworks, Reference Manager, etc. This all means that you can quickly and easily reference sources in Digital Case with your research.

(Both Zotero & RIS formatted citations available on DatstreamDetail pages.)

The KSL website has more information on citing sources
available here

Digital Case not only stores, disseminates, and preserves the intellectual output of Case Western Reserve University, but has also been working hard to provide an excellent user experience. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to allow users to experience the content directly through the browser, with as few technical hurdles as possible.

The first step was to display images using a flash image viewer which allowed you to zoom in and out of digital images. The second step was to expose digitally encoded books, using TEI, through the
Digital Case Book Viewer. The third step was to ramp up the image viewing experience with the
3D Image Wall. We are now excited to announce the ability to stream multimedia files directly from Digital Case.

Users have always had the ability to download these files to their computer and play them separately, but that could often take valuable time. This option remains, however users can now listen to audio or watch video directly in the page, providing a consistent user experience.

When you navigate to a page with audio or video, this is what you will see:

A New Digital Case Banner

An interactive Tag Cloud that displays the current 25 most searched terms in Digital Case

>The Robert M. Stecher Collection of Charles Darwin Books and Manuscripts is an outstanding resource for the study of Charles Darwin. It is an excellent example of what a knowledgeable and enthusiastic collector can do for scholarship. Over a period of thirty-seven years, Dr. Stecher collected both the works of Darwin and other 19th century naturalists and those writings that influenced Darwin's thought. Over 175 manuscript letters by Darwin, his family and his contemporaries (such as A.R Wallace, Grant Allen, Henry W. Bates, J. Brodie Innes and many others) are also an invaluable part of the collection. These letters document Darwin's daily life and reveal the struggle of the Victorians to formulate and accept the theory of evolution. A link to the collection is

>The
United States Steel Corporation Annual Reports are now up in Digital Case, beginning with the first issue in 1902. In 2003 a Library Opportunity Grant was awarded to Kelvin Smith Library and the Weatherhead School of Management(WSOM) to digitize and make publicly available 100 years of the annual reports for U.S. Steel. Faculty in the WSOM have a continuing interest in business and accounting history. Of particular interest is the longitudinal/historical developments for various steel and auto and auto supply companies. U.S Steel Corporation is particularly important because it is the first billion dollar capitalized corporation to emerge in the United States. As such it serves as the prototype of what was going to happen in business during the 20th century. Having a full picture of the financial reporting over the 100 years will give not only business scholars but researchers in history, law, political science and other fields a valuable “window†into how the process developed and changed over time.</div

Year of Darwin Beginning in the Fall of 2008 and proceeding through the Spring semester, departments from across Case Western Reserve University will sponsor events and programs celebrating Charles Darwin's life, his work and the diverse ways in which evolutionary theory continues to influence research and thought in biology and other fields. Some of these events will be intended primarily for an academic audience and others will be intended for the general public. On a roughly monthly basis, prominent individuals who have contributed significantly either to the progress or the popularization of evolutionary science will be coming to Case to deliver lectures and participate in the celebration.
Digitalcase is now creating annual snapshots of the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History (ECH) collection. There are 3 collections currently listed. A 2008,2009 editions as well as every article showing in one collection. KSL will continue to create these on an annual basis.
http://library.case.edu/digitalcase/BrowseCollections.aspx?PID=ksl:AnnualECHCollection Also, as part of the ECH annual editions, KSL has implemented a feature in Digitalcase that allows multiple versions of a particular object to be presented in the Digitalcase interface. This feature which can be seen below, shows all versions of an object to be displayed in a timeline fashion. This will be useful for displaying serialized publications as well as Encyclopedia collections like ECH.

>New
collection of videos and text from the Michelson-Morley Centennial Symposium 1987, which took place October 30-31 at Case Western Reserve University. The symposium commemorates not only the centenary of the Michelson-Morley experiment, but also the broad-ranging creativity of the men who performed it. Organized and coordinated by the Michelson-Morley Centennial Celebration (an Ohio non-profit corporation), the Festival has elicited the participation of thirteen of Cleveland's educational and cultural institutions in an extraordinary cooperative enterprise. (written by Dorothy Humel Hovorka) Modern Physics in America derives from the theme from the original Michelson-Morley experiments in the summer of 1887. The focus on the symposium is the progress and research during the hundred years which separate the experiments and date the symposium. This point in time during the summer of 1887 has been referred to as the beginning of modern physics. Most of the major areas of physics are reflected in the symposium, including many world-renowned scientists. The text in the collection includes the complete scan of a 22 page pamphlet, 'Modern Physics in America', published by the university for the symposium. This includes a forward by Dorothy Humel Hovorka, an introduction by William Fickinger and Kenneth L. Kowalski and the 'Celebration' essay by John Schoff Millis.</div
