Position Description
GE Lighting in Euclid, OH is seeking students interested in a Co-Op assignment for its Materials Characterization Laboratory. Be part of an energized team of scientists involved in chemical and physical characterization of materials related to our Lighting business. We work in a diverse, exciting environment with access to state-of-the-art equipment applied to challenging manufacturing and technology projects that enhance quality, growth and competitiveness.

Using skills developed in school, individuals will be challenged to apply their education to projects important to the success of our business. Assignments will include sample preparation using various acids for sample dissolution purposes and assisting lab technicians in analysis such as: trace impurity analysis in refractory materials by ICP-OES elemental analysis; determination of carbon and oxygen in metals by combustion analysis (LECO); and wet chemistry.

Qualifications
Students currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Chemistry.

Demonstrated analytical approach to problem solving, initiative, strong communication skills, effective team skills, computer skills and coursework or related experience are required.

An excellent record of academic achievement and solid analytical skills are strongly preferred.

Additional Information
Position is 20 to 40 hours/week during lab business hours (7 am to 4:30 pm).

Electrochemical Job Opening at Energizer

Energizer is seeking an engineer for battery development in their Lithium Product Group. This is an exempt position at Energizer's Global Technology Center in Westlake, OH. The successful candidate will apply electrochemistry, materials and engineering principles to battery design concepts and conduct product and process experiments. The position requires the generation and evaluation of new engineering or scientific knowledge through the use of DOE and statistical analysis techniques to execute experiments that lead to new or improved products or processes. Energizer will also look for the candidate to develop and recommend technical approaches to accomplish Technology objectives. The employee must be able to acquire knowledge of the pertinent technical literature, as well as be able to monitor competitor product improvements and intellectual property. It is expected that work will be performed in a team environment comprised of both internal and external partners across multiple disciplines, culminating in regular written documentation and oral presentations which both assess and record the progress of the work. The employee will supervise and develop 1-3 non-exempt colleagues and provide annual appraisals of their performance and developmental feedback. They will mentor others and provide technical and project leadership, and will be expected to participate in establishing Intellectual Property related to assigned programs. Travel requirements are estimated at a 20% level.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS: B.S. or M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Material Science. 1-5 years experience in product or process engineering strongly preferred. Candidates must be authorized to work full time in the U.S.

PREFERRED SKILLS: Design for Six Sigma, Statistics and Design of Experiments, computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint and familiarity with battery or portable power systems; Project Management/Team Leadership and Microsoft Project is highly desirable.

Responsibilities include:


  • Understanding and performing basic testing calculations; ability to identify and resolve incorrect calculations and process the calculations manually if necessary. Recognizing data inconsistencies before recording.
  • Recognizing priority conflicts of testing; prioritize and communicate schedule conflicts to supervisor ; run multiple tests at a time.

This new position is a great opportunity for those interested in being a part of a fast growing molecular diagnostics laboratory that will be developing molecular assays utilized in patient care. These assays will be in the areas of oncology (solid tumors and hematopathology), molecular genetics, pharmacogenetics, and infectious diseases. In consultation with the medical director, the primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to develop new molecular diagnostic assays for use in patient care. The successful candidate will:


  1. work independently to evaluate the medical literature and develop plans for implementation of new clinical diagnostic molecular assays;
  2. determine the best methodologies/technologies to utilize in particular assays that will be used clinically and does experiments to develop these assays,
  3. maintain a close working relationship with the medical director, lead technologist/supervisor and technologists to ensure smooth transition of new molecular assays and procedures from the development stage into routine clinical use, and
  4. will perform clinical testing, reviews test results, and report results for use in patient care as needed.

There will also be clinical/translational research opportunities. The candidate will have a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD degree in biology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, or bioengineering with experience developing molecular assays in a research or clinical setting. This would be a non-faculty hospital union position with excellent benefits and an annual salary around $57,500 with an increase to around $61,000 in June of 2011.

Larry Seger at Promerus has an intern position open, please see the attached to complete info. The starting salary will be in the $18/hr range. The job description is unreasonably broad and no one could be qualified in all of these areas. There are a number of projects in play and the intention is to select a bright candidate and steer them in their area of interest, programming, electronics, instrument coupling, etc. They are willing to accept someone for 8 hrs/day for 5 days/week(full time /temp), or some reasonable portion of that, such as 4hrs/day for 5 days/wk or 8hrs/day on Tues Thurs...etc.
