Fuel Cycle Research Awards

The Office of Fuel Cycle Technologies of the U.S. Department of Energy is sponsoring an awards program for students. The program is designed to:
1. award graduate and undergraduate students for innovative fuel-cycle-relevant research publications and
2. demonstrate the Office of Fuel Cycle Technologies commitment to higher education in fuel cycle relevant disciplines.
In addition to cash prizes, the top-ranked prize winners will be invited to participate in and present at the 2010 ANS Winter Conference (up to $1,400 in compensation for allowable travel expenses) and to participate in an Innovators’ Forum, a forum designed to engage students in advancing innovations in fuel cycle research.
The Subject Areas
· Nuclear Science and Engineering (including Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Material Science, etc.)
· Fuel Separations and Waste Forms
· Advanced Materials (in core, including cladding and structural materials)
· Nuclear Fuels
· Isotope Transmutation
· Nuclear Material Accountability and Control Instrumentation
· Systems Engineering and Analysis (Includes decision support simulators which may include game theory)
· Energy Policy (with a focus on Nuclear Energy)
The Competitions and the Awards*
Open Competition (with well-qualified papers, the intent is to award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards in the open competition in each of the above subject areas): 1st Place: $3000, 2nd Place: $2,500, 3rd Place: $2,000
Competition for Students Who Attend Universities with Less than $500M in 2008 R&D Expenditures*** (with well-qualified papers, the intent is to provide 10 awards): $1,500
Undergraduate Competition*** (with well-qualified papers, the intent is to provide 10 awards): $1,000
* This competition is for U.S. citizens.
** The first place papers in the open competition will be invited to present at the ANS Winter Meeting. Up to $1,400 in compensation for allowable expenses will be provided for conference registration and travel expenses.
*** The authors of the top five papers in the competition for students who attend universities with less than $500M in 2008 R&D expenditures and the authors of the top five papers in the Undergraduate Competition will be compensated up to $1,400 for allowable expenses to attend the ANS Winter Meeting or the FCRD Annual Meeting.

The application process is easy. Go to www.fuelcycleinnovations.org and complete the simple on-line application. Then, convert the paper to a pdf file and submit the paper as an email attachment to innovations@wtamu.edu
