Here’s an update on some exciting things that have occurred or are in process that enhance RIT as a university for graduate study:
-- We formally opened the university's new Center for Student Innovation last fall. The center is already helping to spawn new technologies, innovative products and services, potential new business ideas, and is an important part of the university's effort to infuse creativity and innovation into all areas of our curriculum.
-- Planning is underway for our second annual Graduate Student Research Symposium. Last year's symposium featured posters and presentations from 70 graduate students - this year's symposium is expected to double that number.
-- We just opened our new $10 million student-service center for student-activities and our more than 100 student clubs and organizations.
-- We’ve inked many new partnerships and research agreements that will offer our students even greater opportunities for collaborative study and research – visit our research web site to read more.
-- We’re preparing for our third annual Creativity + Innovation Festival that will feature more than 500 research projects of our students and faculty. Save the date - you’re invited to this free event. You’ll receive a personal invitation to this event in an April email.
-- Our industry-leading activities in sustainability education, research and practice are now highlighted on our new Sustainability web site.
-- RIT just announced a switch to a semester calendar beginning in 2013. This will bring RIT in line with the calendars of most other universities while offering students more opportunities for additional study, academic support, and socializing with friends at other schools during breaks.
-- Many of our 80 graduate programs are still accepting applications.

Purdue Life Science Ph.D. Open House
Program Date: November 13, 2009
Website: www.gradschool.purdue.edu/pulse
I am writing from Purdue University to invite your junior and senior undergraduates to the PULSe Fall Open House on Friday, November 13, 2009. This open house serves as an opportunity to introduce your students to the Purdue University Interdisciplinary Life Science Ph.D. Program (PULSe). PULSe provides opportunities for an interdisciplinary graduate experience in the basic life sciences for Ph.D. students.
I am calling upon you to provide this information to those students you think would benefit from an information session about the PULSe program. Our day of activities will include a meet the faculty session, lunch with current students, and a tour of lab facilities. Your students will gain exposure to some of the life science research being done at Purdue, while they are also given an opportunity to talk with faculty and students to familiarize themselves with the PULSe Program.
Some of the highlights of PULSe:
- All students admitted to PULSe receive paid tuition and an assistantship for the entire first year of study to allow them to complete core requirements and participate in laboratory rotations. The level of support in subsequent years will meet or exceed the level of support provided in the student’s first year.
- PULSe students carry out research rotations in FOUR labs for periods of SEVEN weeks each in Year 1, two rotations in Fall semester and two in Spring.
- While in PULSe, students participate in a curriculum designed to provide them with the professional skills necessary for research in the life sciences. These include: scientific communication, proposal writing, and ethics.
An invitation to the PULSe Fall Open House on Friday, November 13, 2009 appears below.
All RSVP’s should be e-mailed to Dr. Colleen Gabauer, Director of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs, at cgabauer@purdue.edu. Should you have any questions about the Fall Open House or the PULSe Program, please feel free to call 765-494-9256.

Scholarship for Renewable Energy M.Sc. in Iceland
Application Deadline: November 9, 2009
Program Dates: February 8, 2010 - February 19, 2011
Letter: PDF
Website: http://www.res.is/
RES | the School for Renewable Energy Science in Iceland is now accepting applications for its one year (90 ECTS credits) international M.Sc. Degree Program in Renewable Energy Science, for the academic year 2010-11.
The RES Program will in February 2010 complete its second year of operation when 38 masters’ degree students from twelve different countries will graduate. The students are specializing in four different fields, namely Geothermal Energy, Biofuels & Bioenergy, Fuel Cell Systems & Hydrogen, and Energy Systems. Next year a specialization in Hydropower will be added in collaboration with Iceland’s National Power Company (Landsvirkjun).
RES is a private institution of higher learning, a graduate school, affiliated with the University of Iceland in Reykjavik and the University of Akureyri in North-Iceland.
RES is seeking limited number of highly qualified students to enroll in the M.Sc. Degree Program. A number of Scholarship Awards are also available for outstanding students, including half or full tuition fee waiver.
We would appreciate if you could kindly discuss our M.Sc. Degree Program details and scholarship opportunities with some of your top students interested in pursuing a degree in renewable energy from Iceland. Currently 80% of primary energy in Iceland comes from renewable energy sources, highest of any nation. Essentially 100% of electricity generation in Iceland is already from renewable energy sources. Therefore Iceland is a good example for other nations to follow on their route to a more sustainable energy future.
For more details about RES and the M.Sc. Degree Program please see my attached letter with this email.
Please feel free to contact the Rector’s Office at rector@res.is for further information, or visit our RES homepage at www.res.is.
